Musical Talent in Abundance at King’s Hawford

On Thursday evening, pupils wowed the audience with the first Ensembles Concert of this academic year. The Concert brought together members of the Junior Choir, Brass Group, Musical Theatre Group and Senior Choir. It was a splendid occasion, showcasing the depth and breadth of musical talent at King’s Hawford.

Junior Choir, made up of 36 pupils from Years 2 and 3, kicked off proceedings. They sang Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The upbeat song certainly set the tone for the performance. Next up they sang Tomorrow from Annie by Charnin and Strouse before finishing with I Just Gotta Sing by Ex-Cathedra. The singing was exceptional but beyond this it was wonderful to see all of the children performing confidently with beaming smiles on their faces. You could tell that they were thoroughly enjoying performing to an audience!

Next, Mrs Hughes welcomed Brass Group to the stage led by brass teacher, Mr David Bates. The six members of Brass Group; Jack M, Oscar H, Harry G, Ben L, James B and Thea E started off with a harmony exercise to warm up their lips and instruments before launching into Marching Along Song by Chris North. The group’s performance of Mexicano by Mark Walker was fun-filled and upbeat, with a funky backing track. The audience were extremely impressed with all of the brass players, who showed off their great technical ability. Brass Group finished their set with a surprise performance of Football Chant. Mr Bates encouraged audience participation and it was wonderful to have everyone in The Barn joining in!

Musical Theatre Group, led by school dance coach Miss Lusted, added a theatrical element to the concert. They performed a scene and song from Matilda – the musical by Tim Minchin. It was great to see over 20 pupils from Years 3 to 6 coming together. The role of the narrator was split, ensuring all pupils had the chance to speak. The fun-packed, high-energy performance had the audience in stitches. They then launched into a high energy rendition of Naughty. The song paired excellent vocals with impressive choreography.

Senior Choir slowed things down, treating the audience to three songs that were performed last week in the St Richard’s Hospice Lights of Love service in Worcester Cathedral. They started with Hushabye Mountain from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Sherman and Sherman, before performing a traditional piece, the Skye Boat Song arranged by MacLeod and Boulton, ending with Easy on Me by Adele.  Their performance was absolutely beautiful, prompting Mr Butt to admit that it was the third time in a week that Senior Choir had moved him to tears with their singing. The whole audience were mesmerised by the mature performance given by Senior Choir. The evening was the perfect showcase of the musical talent that is in abundance at King’s Hawford.
