Pupil’s put on polished performances

U8 Football v Winterfold

On Tuesday afternoon the Year 2 boys welcomed a team from Winterfold House to King’s Hawford. They enjoyed a fast-paced game and all of the staff agreed that it was by far the best performance so far this season from our boys. They had taken on board all of the coaching points from recent training sessions and fixtures and worked extremely hard on making accurate passes and finding space. As a result they scored three collaborative goals. Harry J put in an exceptional stint in goal, thoroughly impressing Mr Marsland.

U9 Football vs Winterfold

On Tuesday afternoon we also welcomed U9 teams from Winterfold for two football matches on the bottom field. The boys worked really hard to continue to implement our philosophy of one and two-touch passing and movement when in possession of the ball and they put together several excellent passages of play that led to goals. A special mention should go to James B, whose continued good form saw him progress up a team and grab a goal with his first touch after coming on, as well as Barnaby J, who produced a Man of the Match performance in defence.

U10 Football vs Blue Coat and Hallfield

On Monday afternoon the U10 boys hosted both Blue Coat and Hallfield Schools for a triangular fixture on the top field. The games were all highly competitive and evenly matched, with the Hawford boys continuing to develop their positional awareness and application of tactics, both in attack and defence. We were especially pleased with the performance of Isaac R, who was solid in defence and demonstrated intelligent distribution of the ball. A highlight of the afternoon was a powerfully struck goal from outside the box from Rhys M.

U11 Football vs RGS The Grange and Winterfold

On Wednesday afternoon our U11 boys travelled to a snowy Winterfold to compete in a triangular fixture against the hosts and RGS The Grange. Despite the cold conditions, the Hawford boys dominated the afternoon, effectively using width and depth in attack whilst also looking solid at the back in both matches. The highlight of the afternoon was a brace of goals for Barnaby B in the match against RGS, as well as the tough tackling and effective distribution of Man of the Match and captain for the afternoon, Max M. Next week will see the boys travel down to Bristol for the eagerly awaited ISFA Regional Competition.

U10 Netball v Hallfield

This week the U10 girls travelled to Birmingham to play netball against Hallfield; because of COVID it has been a while since we have played them. The girls were split into two teams and both showed that they worked well together, using the skills on which we had been working. Miss Holtham’s team were excellent at finding space and calling for the ball; this then allowed the girls to make some very good passes. Miss Kingston’s team were working hard on passing the ball directly to each other with short, sharp passes instead of loopy ones, as the other team had a few tall players. All the girls worked hard despite the rain when the matches first started; they will now work on improving their skills ready for their House matches.

In Miss Holtham’s team this week Holly was the team captain, Harriette was chosen as Player of the Match by Hallfield and Miss Holtham’s player was Robyn G. In Miss Kingston’s team Ava I was the team captain, Ava H was chosen as Player of the Match by Hallfield and Chloe P was Miss Kingston’s player.

U9 Netball RGS The Grange Tournament

On a chilly, sunny and snow-showered Tuesday afternoon, seven of our Year 4 girls travelled to RGS The Grange for a netball tournament with 13 other school teams from Hereford and Worcestershire.

King’s Hawford were up against some extremely strong teams, but the girls were excited, focused, and raring to go.

After a warm-up and tactical talk, the girls stepped onto the court for their first game against Hereford Cathedral School. The girls played their socks off and, despite the match being a tough one with which to start the tournament, we soon found our flow. The passing was slick and controlled and the girls calmly moved the ball into attack, evading their opponents. The second match saw us up against The Elms, which was always going to be a tough game. Nonetheless, the girls rose to the challenge.  Thanks to some great defending from Elizabeth, Iza, Thea and Olivia G, we were able to intercept incoming balls and mark players effectively.

Millie B was on fine form at Goal Attack and controlled the mid-court well as she moved the ball successfully into attack, while Pippa P also assisted beautifully at Goal Shooter, with Lyra finding herself dominating the play as Centre. The girls have been working hard at shooting and this effort paid off as our goal rate was close to 100% successful, often scoring goals in quick succession. As King’s Hawford took on Moor Park, Blue Coat, Abberley and RGS The Grange, the girls continued to play some lovely, skilful, and fast-paced netball, gaining some impressive victories. In our pool we only lost one game (by one goal), won four games, and drew one.

All the girls played to their best and did King’s Hawford, Mrs Beech and Miss Holtham proud. The girls played cohesively and supported each other superbly, demonstrating what a solid team they are.

The future of girls’ netball is very strong at Hawford and although the season is ending, we hope all the girls continue to practice, build on the skills and confidence they have learnt from lessons and matches and look forward to a competitive season in Year five.

Mrs Beech would like to thank parents who supported on the day and King’s St Alban’s, who also supported King’s Hawford in their matches when able to.
