Pupils triumph in House Bake Off

“Ready, Steady, Bake!”
The annual King’s Hawford House Bake Off returned to school this week. Last weekend children were set the optional task of baking a batch of cakes of their choice. On Monday morning many children arrived at school clutching cake tins packed full of the yummy spoils of all their hard work. The children convened in their House groups, where they were judged by staff members from the House and their non-baker peers. The individual House winners were awarded certificates and wooden spoons. They were then whisked off to the School Office, where the head judges had assembled. Pupils then went head to head in an immediate taste-off final!
First up were our Prep Baker finalists: Valerie M (Bredon), Henry D (Clent), Thomas C (Malvern) and Freddie W (Kinver). The judges for the Prep Final were Mr Butt, Mrs Beech and Miss Crowe. The children were quizzed on their cakes and their baking techniques. They then waited anxiously as the judges sampled each of their cakes.
Henry D was commended for the aesthetics of his cookie monster cupcakes. Freddie W’s movie themed popcorn cupcakes looked impressive; the popcorn and marshmallows provided an excellent contrast to the icing. Thomas C’s cakes came complete with a hidden homemade caramel centre, whilst Valerie’s brownies had a wonderfully crunchy consistency, thanks to the addition of Malteasers to the batch.
The pupils were ushered back into the Front Office whilst the judges deliberated. Valerie was eventually crowned the overall winner of the Prep House Bake Off competition and Mr Butt presented her with the winner’s trophy.
Our Pre-Prep Baker House finalists were Elise M, Isaac R, Sophia R and Georgia. A new judging panel was introduced for the Pre-Prep taste-off: Mrs Adams and Mrs Elliott joined Mr Butt to bring fresh taste buds to the table.
Elise’s Easter themed carrot cake immediately caught the judges’ eyes. It was decorated with wonderful green icing, complete with bunnies. Luckily for the judges, the carrot cake tasted as a good as it looked; it was delicious and the judges picked up on the cinnamon flavour. They were particularly impressed by the fact that the cake was dairy-free!
Isaac had produced a selection of beautifully decorated cupcakes, all with a slightly different toppings. The judges selected a cake adorned with jelly beans and commented on the great consistency of the cupcake.
Next up the judges tried Sophia’s cake. Sophia was keen to explain the reasoning behind her cake decorations, with the fruit pastels representing when her mum was born and the mini eggs symbolising Easter. The judges enjoyed the jam centre to the cake and detected a lovely hint of vanilla.
Georgia’s Dairy Milk cupcakes smelled delicious, and the judges thoroughly enjoyed sampling them.
It was Elise who scooped the winner’s trophy and converted the entire judging panel to carrot cake lovers!
Well done to all our superstar bakers! Despite the weather, we were pleased to report that there were no soggy bottoms….
