Reception’s Egg-cellent Arrival: Meet Our Chicks!
There was huge excitement in Reception this week as our long-awaited chick eggs began to hatch! At the time of writing, we are proud to report that nine healthy, fluffy chicks have made their arrival into the world, with a couple more possibly on the way. The children watched in awe as the chicks pecked their way out of their shells, marvelling at the miracle of new life right before their eyes.
This experience has been much more than just cute and cuddly, it has been a rich and meaningful learning opportunity for our young pupils. From understanding the life cycle of a chicken to learning about responsibility, care, and empathy, the chick hatching project has brought science and nurture together in the most engaging and hands-on way. The children have taken on the role of ‘chick parents’ with great enthusiasm and maturity, showing gentle hands and kind hearts as they carefully held and looked after their new feathered friends.
Naming the chicks was a highlight of the week, and the Reception class were incredibly excited to share all of their chick news with Mr Hawker. Each child proudly introduced the chick they had named and shared the most interesting fact they had learned during the hatching experience, from how long a chick stays in the egg to how they learn to stand and walk after hatching. It was a wonderful moment of pride and ownership, showing just how much they have absorbed and enjoyed this special project.
The children will continue to care for the chicks, observing their growth and changes before they return to the farm. This has truly been an unforgettable experience that has inspired curiosity, sparked thoughtful questions, and built confidence and compassion among our youngest learners.
We are incredibly proud of how caring, curious, and engaged our Reception pupils have been, they’ve truly stepped into their roles as gentle, responsible caregivers, proving themselves to be fantastic little chick Mummies and Daddies!
