Hockey

U9 v Winterfold School

Ten U9 girls travelled to Winterfold for their first hockey festival of the year, full of excitement and determination.

The afternoon saw both teams putting in excellent performances and showing real progress on the pitch.

Mrs Halpin’s team faced a tough start, playing three back-to-back matches. The girls rose to the challenge with great effort and teamwork. Aoife and Bella made important contributions throughout, while Indie and Isla made sensible interceptions. Syrenna grew into the games with each performance, demonstrating resilience and determination, particularly in the match against King’s St. Alban’s.

Miss Lake’s team enjoyed a successful afternoon, finishing undefeated across all their matches. A highlight came with a superb move when Martha’s precise pass to Alice led to a brilliant goal against RGS The Grange. More goals followed, with Martha, Alice and Maddie all adding to the scoresheet in various matches.

Sadie worked tirelessly throughout, while Bonnie put in a solid display in defence. For their excellent efforts, Sadie and Alice were each awarded Player of the Match twice on Miss Lake’s team, and Bella and Syrenna were highlighted by Mrs Halpin for their efforts across the afternoon.

U8/U9 Hockey v Hallfield School.

Mrs Butt’s and Miss Cook’s teams travelled to Hallfield School for their hockey fixtures.

Mrs Butt’s team started strong led by captain Georgina N. Tanith and Rosie found their way on to the scoreboard in quick succession with some quick thinking and impressive individual skill.

The pace of passing was good with Lily G clearing the ball out from defence and Georgina making several attacking runs to put the Hallfield team under pressure. Emily G was strong on the wing making some good tackles and delivering the ball up to Tanith to find the goal once again.

In the second half, Hallfield came back stronger and had several attempts on goal, Jessica came on for Georgina and worked hard to hold the Hallfield team back.

Overall, it was a fantastic team performance with Rosie named player of the match once again by the opposition.

Miss Cook’s team was led out on to the pitch by captain Trixie, who showed tremendous determination with her tackling and passing throughout the game.

The girls had a challenge on their hands as an U8 team playing a Hallfield U9 team, but they showed great resilience and were not fazed by the opposition.

Elizabeth and Poppy worked tirelessly in defence to keep the ball out of the danger zone, and despite Hallfield’s strength they made excellent tackles and cleared the ball out for their team.

Matilda and Florence found good space on the field and took every opportunity to get the ball up the pitch. The team had several opportunities on goal, Minnow and Fifi were always lying in wait in attack and success came with a well-timed shot on goal from Fifi.

Overall, it was a fantastic team performance with the girls gaining valuable match play experience. Trixie was named player of the match by the opposition, and all the girls enjoyed the opportunity.

U11, RGS The Grange Tournament

On Wednesday, the King’s Hawford U11 Hockey team took part in the competitive RGS The Grange tournament with 10 teams competing for the final.

The group stage was fiercely contested, and our players showed outstanding determination from the very first whistle. Jasmine led her team as captain and every match was played with great energy, teamwork, and commitment. The team’s resilience paid off in a tough opening match against Bromsgrove finishing in a draw.

The second game against The Downs went our way with Charlotte F getting on the score sheet to take the win.

In the third game, Jasmine took a strike on goal and finding the backboard to win another in the stage.

The final group game against The Blue Coat school was very competitive, the girls won tinted to work tirelessly and despite having a goal disallowed they kept their composure under pressure. Robyn made several tremendous saves throughout the tournament, but the opposition were able to sneak one through in the final minutes.

After an excellent team performance, the girls finished third in the group, narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot by just one point. It was a bittersweet result for the girls coming so close to progressing further, however they should be extremely proud of their efforts and the progress they are making as a team.

Overall, it was an excellent team performance that highlighted the squad’s development, work rate and growing confidence. The experience will no doubt make the team stronger for the future competitions.

A huge well done to all the girls involved include in Robyn C, Jasmine O, Charlotte F, Florrie W, Rosie H, Maysie-Jayne L, Bella P, Adelyn K, Vivienne C, Eleanor N.

Rugby

U8 v Malvern The Downs

On Tuesday afternoon, the Year 3 boys welcomed their peers from Malvern The Downs for a fantastic rugby match on the top field.

Mr Hodgkins and Mr Marsland were both hugely impressed by the ball handling skills and decision making of the Hawford boys. In possession, they were selfless and skilfully manoeuvred the ball through hands, using the full width of the pitch and creating spaces in the opposition’s defences that they exploited by scoring several tries.

The boys all played well and produced a fantastic team performance. It was especially pleasing to see the progress made by Nicholas, who finished off a good move with a well taken try in the second half. Charlie was also outstanding in his defensive work, showing energy, enthusiasm and consistency in his pressing and tackling.

U11 v Hereford Cathedral School

On Wednesday afternoon, the Year 6 boys continued their rugby season, once again teaming up with peers from Kings St Albans to take on Hereford Cathedral School. Mr Hodgkins’s team were also joined by Moor Park to create a triangular festival.

The King’s boys worked extremely hard in both matches and were energetic and positive whilst carrying the ball. They applied pleasing decision making when offloading out of tackles, enabling them to maintain momentum in attacks and score several tries across the afternoon.

Highlights included multiple scores from Alex B and Nicholas HT as well as increased tackling enthusiasm and technique from Luca M and Henry L.
