Spring Concert creates buzz of excitement

There was a real buzz of anticipation in College Hall on Tuesday evening as a large audience of supporters gathered to enjoy this term’s Prep School Concert.

These events are the culmination of lots of hard work in our weekly choir and ensemble rehearsals, and involve every member of the Prep School, with many taking part in multiple items.

As is traditional for these concerts, the musical offerings were varied in style. The orchestra’s performance of Oom-Pah-Pah, Guitar Group’s In the Hall of the Mountain King and Wind Band’s lively rendition of Rock Around the Clock, to name just a few items, meant that there was something for everyone.

For the first time, Y4 pupils took partial charge of Junior Choir’s item, two songs from The Hare and the Tortoise Suite by Stuart Overington. Maddie and Marnie’s leadership of the engaging actions to these songs ensured this was a visual as well as musical feast.

Our Y6 soloists performed beautifully and thoroughly deserved their resounding applause. Ace, who has been at King’s St Alban’s since Reception, said she felt “simultaneously nervous and excited” before playing her duet to the largest audience she had ever performed to. Georgina sang Popular from the musical Wicked and said, “I chose this piece because it is fun; I get to wear a tiara and use props. I loved pointing my wand at different people in the audience!” Jack performed Salut D’Amour. He said, “ I loved playing a solo on the piano in College Hall. My performance went really well, and I felt proud when I everyone clapped and I took my bow.” All three deserve special congratulations on their superb performances.

Senior Choir ended the concert on a real high with a superb arrangement by our very own Mr Freestone of How Far I’ll Go, complete with staff ensemble accompaniment. Their final song, Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music was really impressive, and a fitting end to a wonderful evening’s music-making.
