World Book Day champions diversity and difference

Last Thursday, the whole school celebrated World Book Day. Pupils were invited to dress up as their favourite book characters and they did not disappoint. By 8.30am the Hard Surface was a sea of literary characters buzzing with excitement. We had Harry Potters, Willy Wonkas, Elsas, Matildas, Paddington Bears, Fantastic Foxes and Mildred Hubbles, to name but a few.
It wasn’t just the pupils who embraced the opportunity to dress up. Teachers from across the School also joined in, with some fantastically creative costumes delighting the children.
Throughout the day, pupils took part in a carousel of activities based on books which celebrate diversity and difference. These themes tied in with our Random Acts of Kindness Week. The children had the opportunity to work with friends across different year groups on each activity. Activities included creating a diversity rainbow, taking part in a scavenger hunt, learning to sing and sign We’re All Amazing, acting out themed sketches and joining in with a collaborative art project entitled We All Belong.
In Kindergarten, our youngest pupils also enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters, as throughout the day they shared their favourite books with friends and teachers. Ahead of the day, Kindergarten staff worked hard to create a new special book-corner for the children to explore. It is hoped that the new area will encourage children to explore stories which lead to conversations, empowering children to express their own ideas. Repetition of stories and rhymes establishes the basics of language in children’s minds and reinforces learning.
Everyone enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters, and we were very impressed with both the imaginative and sustainable approach to costumes this year. At the end of the day, all children received a World Book Day voucher which they can either put towards a book of their choice or one of the World Book Day publications.
