Year 1 Trip to Avoncroft Museum
Year 1 had a fantastic day at Avoncroft Museum, diving into the world of houses and homes as part of their “Once Upon a Time” topic. Their adventure began with an interactive retelling of The Three Little Pigs, using props and puppets for an immersive experience that brought the story to life.
The children eagerly took on their roles, showcasing their understanding from recent science lessons as they described the materials used by each pig to build their houses. They discussed the properties of straw, sticks, and bricks, explaining why each material behaved differently under pressure.
Following the storytelling, the children worked in teams to construct their own shelters for the Little Pigs. Using straw, sticks, and rubber bricks, they listened carefully to advice on strengthening their structures to withstand the Big Bad Wolf’s huffing and puffing. It was a fun challenge, and the children were proud of their efforts to build sturdy shelters!
The next part of the visit included a tour of Avoncroft’s historical buildings, where the children learned about traditional construction techniques like wattle and daub. They were fascinated to see how homes from the past were built and surprised to learn that they lacked modern conveniences like running water, electricity, and indoor toilets. The idea of outdoor toilets was especially interesting!
As they explored, they observed how household items have evolved over time, from ovens to televisions and toys, seeing firsthand how technology has shaped daily life. The day concluded with a visit to the 200-year-old windmill, where the children braved the steep stairs and listened closely to the miller’s explanations about milling wheat into flour.
It was a day packed with learning, exploration, and excitement, and Year 1 returned with new insights into both history and science. Well done, Year 1!
