Year 3’s geography trip to Big King’s

Last week our Year 3 pupils enjoyed a geography trip to King’s Worcester to support their learning around maps. On arrival at ‘Big King’s’ they were met by members of staff from the Geography Department. For their first activity they worked with a group of Upper Sixth geographers to gain a better understanding of how to read a map. They then tested their new-found skills, using four figure grid references to explore the Senior School site, where they were ably assisted by members of the Sixth Form. As they made their way around the site, pupils had to gather information which they later used to write a story.
After bidding farewell to the Upper Sixth helpers, our Year 3 pupils excitedly headed off to the Senior School Dining Room. Here they were joined by their Year 3 counterparts from King’s St Alban’s. They enjoyed conversing happily with new friends over lunch.
After lunch, Year 3 enjoyed a stroll beside the River Severn, led by Mr Stigant and Mrs Horrocks. During their walk they observed points of interest including canal locks, weirs, bridges and the playing fields at Slingpool Walk. This information will be important in future geography lessons as pupils work to produce sketch maps from their trip.
Before returning to King’s Hawford, pupils were delighted to catch up with some Old Hawfordians. A number of last year’s Year 6 pupils were keen to share their experience of life in Year 7 at ‘Big King’s’. It was wonderful for Mr Stigant and Mrs Horrocks to see how well the current Year 7 pupils have settled into life at the Senior School.
Over the next few years the Year 3 pupils will continue to take part in activities that involve King’s Worcester staff and the Senior School site. These activities help pupils to become more familiar with ‘Big King’s’ and pave the way for a smooth transition to Year 7.
