Year 5 Dive into Science with Ocean Temperature Investigation
This week in Science, Year 5 became hands-on researchers as they explored the question: What effect does ocean temperature have on the rate of ice melting? As part of their topic on climate and environmental change, the class carried out a practical investigation to simulate the impact of rising ocean temperatures on polar ice.
Working in small groups, the pupils used containers of water at different temperatures to observe how quickly ice melted in each one. They were challenged to take accurate temperature readings at regular intervals and carefully record their results. This activity required not only scientific thinking but also patience, precision, and excellent teamwork.
Once the experiment was complete, the children compared their findings and discussed the patterns in their results. They noticed clear differences in melting rates between warmer and cooler water, leading to some thoughtful conclusions about the potential impact of global warming on sea levels and polar habitats.
The investigation sparked meaningful discussion about the importance of climate science and the role we all play in protecting our planet. It was fantastic to see 5E applying the scientific method so confidently asking questions, making predictions, measuring carefully, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
Well done Year 5! A brilliant blend of curiosity, collaboration, and climate-conscious thinking.
