Year 6 Journey Back to the Trenches in WW1 Experience Day

Year 6 children at King’s Hawford were transported back in time during a memorable World War One experience day, led by the charismatic Sergeant Parsons. With a perfect balance of military precision and humour, he brought the Great War to life, ensuring that every child was engaged and inspired.

The day began creatively, as children stepped into the shoes of wartime artists. They designed their own WW1 propaganda posters, focusing on themes of recruitment and training, and quickly realised how powerful imagery and slogans were in shaping attitudes on the Home Front.

Next, history leapt into the twenty-first century with an immersive Tommies and the Trenches VR session. Children experienced the realities of trench life – from the nerve-wracking moment of going “over the top,” to the challenges of sanitation and the vital role of medical care.

Back in the classroom, the children became historians themselves. Through hands-on investigation of real and replica WW1 artefacts, they dressed up in period clothing, examined primary sources, and tackled historical inquiry questions.

The day drew to a close with an interactive quiz, recapping all key learning in a fun, team-based challenge. Laughter and competitive spirit filled the room as everyone demonstrated their new knowledge.

Each child was given a packet of poppy seeds from Flanders Fields to plant at school. This living memorial will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made and as a symbol of the children’s extended historical understanding.

The WW1 visit was a truly enriching experience, sparking curiosity and empathy and enhancing our vibrant Humanities curriculum at King’s Hawford.
