King's Hawford

Flippin’ fantastic fun for the whole school

The King’s Hawford school pancake races are a highlight of the academic year for many of our pupils. It is one of the special occasions where the entire school take part. This year was no different. With pupils from KG1 to Year 6 taking part in a series of races.

The drizzly, dull start to the day did not dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the children nor the staff. The morning started with the Kindergarten races. Children from KG1 to KG2 armed with frying pans battled it out in race along the ‘home straight’ of the hard service. Pupils from Pre-Prep cheered and encouraged their younger peers in each of the races. The Kindergarten staff were on hand to ensure the races ran as smoothly as possible and for a reassuring hand when needed.

After their races KG children returned to the warmth of the nursery building leaving Pre-Prep pupils to battle it out. Reception were up first. They had to complete one length of the hard service equipped with their pan and pancake.

For Years’ 1 and 2 things got a little harder. They were challenged to complete a lap of the hard surface with a number of obstacles. At the first corner the children were required to don a wooly hat, before heading to the second and then the third corner where they were required to complete a flip of the pancake at each. Finally they had to run to the fourth and final corner where they deposited of their hats before dashing for the finish line!

After the last of the Year 2 races children from Years 3 to 6 started to arrive. Excitement and anticipation were high. The challenge for our Prep pupils was similar to that completed by Years 1 and 2 but with the added complexity of needing to flip their pancake twice and the second corner and three times at the third corner. Teachers were stationed on each corner to keep a close eye on each toss!

All of the pupils involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves and is was brilliant to see the amazing school spirit that exists at King’s Hawford on display. There was a healthy amount of competition and an even bigger dose of sportsmanship with children cheering for one another and supporting each other. One of our favourite King’s Hawford events!
