Rugby Festival Fun and Foundation Friendships

This week saw our young rugby players make significant strides in both skill development and fostering friendships across the foundation. From tag rugby festivals to competitive matches, the boys demonstrated growth, teamwork, and a passion for the game.

Tuesday – U8 Rugby Festival at RGS Springfield

On Tuesday afternoon, the Year 3 boys travelled to RGS Springfield for an exciting afternoon of tag rugby, joining teams from Winterfold, The Elms, and Springfield. This non-competitive festival provided a fantastic opportunity for the boys to develop their understanding of tag rugby in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Each child was given ample opportunity to practise their skills, improve game awareness, and enhance their teamwork.

Mr Hodgkins was particularly pleased with the boys’ progress throughout the afternoon, highlighting their improved decision-making in possession and growing structural awareness out of possession. This experience has been invaluable in helping them build a solid foundation in the sport. Everyone is now eagerly anticipating next Tuesday when King’s Hawford will host the next U8 tag rugby festival on the top field.

Wednesday – U10 Rugby vs King’s St Alban’s

Wednesday afternoon saw the Year 5 and 6 boys pitting their wits on the rugby field in matches against our foundation peers from King’s St Alban’s. The U10 boys travelled to the senior school pitches, where they enjoyed a great match, notable not only for the quality of the rugby but also for the friendships built between the players. Many of the Hawford boys had the opportunity to play as part of the St Alban’s team, a process that really helps the boys to build friendships and strengthen bonds across the foundation in preparation for their combined sports at the senior school. This sense of camaraderie and teamwork is key as they grow together as part of the wider King’s family.

Mr Hodgkins praised the positive carries from Charles H and birthday boy Jack J, whose contributions helped drive the team forward. He also highlighted the superb rucking skills from Harry J and the tough tackling by Austin R and Freddie W. Captain for the day, Jasper P, led by example, raising his performance to reflect his leadership role.

Overall, it was a fantastic week of rugby, showcasing not only the boys’ skill development but also the strong relationships they are building both on and off the pitch. They should be proud of their efforts and continued growth as players and teammates.
