Year 6 Step Back in Time at The Commandery
Year 6 pupils enjoyed an exciting and educational visit to The Commandery in Worcester as part of their history studies on the English Civil War. The trip gave children the chance to explore the past in the very city where important events once took place.
During the visit, the children learned about the weapons used during the conflict and even took part in a pike drill. This hands-on activity helped them imagine what life was like for soldiers preparing for battle hundreds of years ago.
As they toured The Commandery, pupils discovered how the historic building played an important role in the Civil War and the Battle of Worcester. They found out why the site is such an important part of the city’s story and how it helps bring history to life.
One of the highlights of the day was dressing up as Cavaliers and Roundheads. The costumes made the experience even more memorable and helped the children understand the different sides involved in the war.
The class also climbed Fort Royal Hill, where they explored what happened during the Battle of Worcester on the site of a Royalist fort. Standing in such an important location helped the children picture the events of the battle far more clearly.
Overall, the visit helped the children understand the significant role Worcester played in the English Civil War and in the decisive Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651. It was a valuable opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom and experience history in an exciting way.
