King's Hawford

Cardiff Sports Tour

Thursday 7th October saw the resumption of the ever-popular annual King’s Hawford Year 6 sports tour to Cardiff. Having lost out on so many trips last year due to COVID regulations, this year’s tour had an added twist with the addition of a beach day full of surfing and bodyboarding!

On Thursday morning we travelled to Monmouth to play rugby and hockey fixtures against Monmouth Prep School. Despite the early start, the children performed extremely well and dominated all matches, making outstanding progress towards their identified targets. Buoyed up by our super start to the tour, the children then jumped back on to the minibuses and waved goodbye to Monmouth, heading off to Cardiff for our tour of The Principality Stadium.

The stadium was extremely impressive and we learnt all about its history, its size and capacity, and the various significant sporting events and music concerts to which it has played host. The children even got a sneaky peek at the stadium’s plans to introduce a rooftop walk and a zip wire ride back down to pitchside!

Following a long day full of fun and achievement, we headed on to our accommodation with Adventure Wales. We were amazed by the beautiful seclusion and sea views on our arrival as well as the very tasty evening meal that awaited us.

On the Friday the children enjoyed a very special day. After a hearty breakfast we made our way to the coast with the instructors at Adventure Wales. Here, we were kitted out in wetsuits and hit the waves with our surf boards and bodyboards. The instructors were amazing and it wasn’t long before a good number of the touring party were standing up on their boards and enjoying catching the waves.

After a thoroughly enjoyable and very tiring day, the touring party heading back to the accommodation for an evening quiz with a very sleepy group of children.

On Saturday we visited Llandaff Cathedral School for more sports fixtures. We have built up a great Anglo-Welsh relationship with Cathedral School and again enjoyed much success in our rugby and netball fixtures. Despite coming off the back of a tiring couple of days, the King’s Hawford boys and girls really raised their game and produced outstanding performances of which we are all very proud.

The children were truly fantastic all tour and enjoyed the opportunity to experience so many excellent activities. Thanks should go to our host schools; Monmouth Prep and Llandaff Cathedral School, as well as the dedicated teaching staff on the trip; Mr Hodgkins, Mrs Marshall-Walker, Mr Marsland, Miss Crowe and Miss Layton.
