Cricket season gets underway
U8 Girls’ Cricket v Winterfold
On Tuesday afternoon, a group of King’s Hawford’s Year Three girls set the Summer Term fixtures off to a super start with an impressive performance against Winterfold. For the majority of the girls, it was their first ever cricket match and they all performed admirably, applying their hard work from recent games sessions in which they have been developing their bowling, batting and fielding strategies. The girls made outstanding progress throughout the match, with all of them improving the consistency and accuracy of their bowling action. Mr Hodgkins was especially impressed with the positive batting intent from Eleanor and Simi, as well as the bowling performances of Persie, Aurelia and top wicket taker, Ellie H.
U9 Girls’ Cricket v Winterfold
The weather was finally kind to us on Tuesday and allowed the U9 girls to enjoy their first Cricket match of the season against Winterfold. After just one Games session and one club session, the girls stepped out confidently with a clear plan and bucketsful of enthusiasm.
The girls bowled first and were led out by Captain Florrie. She did brilliantly to arrange her field and kept up some great positive communication throughout the bowling session. Whilst there were no catches, we saw some tremendous stops from Zara and Maysie-Jayne, denying Winterfold a boundary, and a brilliant display of fielding all round from the girls. Robyn was very sharp in the field and threw the ball in quickly and accurately.
All the girls bowled an over each, with many of them executing great technique and getting their eye in as time went on. A special mention goes to Charlotte F, who had a fantastic over of bowling, restricting Winterfold to only one run, and to Jasmine O, for taking a fantastic wicket in the final over.
Florrie and Maysie-Jayne opened the batting for the team and established a good base for the rest of the girls pairs to build upon. Jasmine and Rosie scored 11 as a pair, with Jasmine finding the boundary for a Four. Robyn and Charlotte were the highest scoring batting pair, scoring 21 runs between them which included two boundaries. Adelyn and Ariana were another very strong batting pair, showing some great running between the wickets and contributing 16 runs to the final score. Valerie and Zara did a fantastic job batting as the final pair, demonstrating great communication and team work.
The game was an excellent start to the cricket season, showing real promise both at the crease and in the field. All the girls worked hard and stayed focussed on the targets set at the start of the game. They narrowly missed out on the win by just four runs but, with the rest of the season ahead of them, they have identified what to work on in the next few weeks.
Jasmine was named the Batting Player of the Match and Florrie was named the Player of the Match for Bowling by the opposition. Well done girls!
U11 Girls Cricket v Winterfold
On Wednesday the U11 Girls travelled to Winterfold for their first cricket match of the season. With the fields still a little wet, the girls were playing on the Astro, so completed a thorough warm up to get used to the surface, with some superior coaching from the side-line by Mr Stigant.
Jetta P captained her team beautifully throughout, with some great encouragement, and led by example with her play on the field.
Batting first, the girls quickly established a rhythm, with Robyn G finding the boundary to score a Four from the second ball of the match. Robyn was paired with Hattie, and with some great communication the girls put down a solid 15 runs after the first two overs. Sienna then went on to find the boundary twice with some slick shots, followed by Annabel and Robyn again to secure a total of 335.
The girls were gaining in confidence with every ball and were in a very positive position going in to bowl.
Darcy B set the tone, opening the bowling with a wicket maiden over and displaying some tremendously accurate bowling to set the King’s Hawford team up well to defend their total. Jetta P and Hattie both continued the run, taking wickets and showing fantastic fielding throughout. Darcy B top and tailed the bowling, finishing with a wicket in the last over of the game and setting King’s Hawford up for the win.
Sienna G, Ava H and Ava W all bowled excellently, showing a lot of potential to take wickets in future games. Ava I, Bella and Chloe made a fantastic contribution in the outfield, getting the ball into the stumps as quickly as they could and limiting Winterfold’s run rate.
Mrs Butt was really impressed with the energy and enthusiasm from all the girls and, with a few things to work on over the next few sessions, the U11 girls should have a great season ahead.
Match Report by Captain Jetta P and Darcy B
All the girls worked really hard in both batting and fielding in this match against Winterfold and there were several highlights. I, as Captain, won Rock, Paper, Scissors and chose to bat first. Annabel scored a Four and both Robyn and Sienna score two Fours. For the bowling, Hattie D took a great wicket and Darcy and I took two wickets each. The final score was 263 to Winterfold and 335 to us, giving us the win!
The top three pairs with the most runs were Sienna and Ava W with a total of 14; next we have Hattie and Robyn with 15, and the top scoring pair, with a total of 20 runs, were Annabel and Chloe.
The Player of the Match for Fielding was Darcy B and the Player of the Match for Batting was Robyn G. Winterfold and King’s Hawford played exceptionally well against each other, and it was a great match!
U11 Boys Cricket vs Winterfold
On Wednesday, the U11 cricketers welcomed Winterfold for the opening fixtures of their final term at King’s Hawford. The children in Mr Hodgkins’s team made a fantastic start, producing an accomplished performance with both bat and ball. Bowling first, all 12 players demonstrated control, threat and accuracy in their overs. Wickets from Rhys M, George O, Rory G, Ismail B, Harriet B, James B, Harry C, Henry W and Will N managed to reduce the number of runs that Winterfold were able to achieve. The Hawford players went about chasing down the total with confidence and determination. Despite the pace of the Winterfold bowling attack, and the fall of a few wickets, the Hawford batters demonstrated excellent decision-making when running between the wickets and key late partnerships from Harriet B, Holly J, Oliver HS and George O were enough to see the team successfully home.
