U9 vs Winterfold
King’s Hawford U9s put in a determined performance against Winterfold School on Tuesday.
Mr Hodgkins’ team
Mr Hodgkins’ team worked hard throughout the match and produced a particularly encouraging display with the ball. The children demonstrated developing bowling techniques, with many showing improved actions and a growing understanding of line and length. As the innings progressed, their deliveries became increasingly consistent, resulting in greater accuracy and control. This consistency helped to build pressure on the opposition and was a clear reflection of the hard work the players have been putting into their practice sessions.
When batting, run-scoring opportunities were somewhat limited, as the opposition at times struggled to bowl deliveries that were in hittable areas. As a result, many of our runs came in the form of extras. Despite this, the children remained patient and alert, running well between the wickets whenever opportunities presented themselves. The children’s positive calling and willingness to take quick singles demonstrated good teamwork and awareness.
Overall, it was another positive outing, with plenty of effort, enthusiasm and developing cricket skills on display. The team’s improving bowling performance was particularly pleasing and provides a strong foundation to build upon in future matches.
Miss Lake’s team
Miss Lake’s team took to the field first, captained by Bonita-May. It was wonderful to see how much the girls’ bowling had improved, thanks to their tremendous hard work and dedication during Games lessons over the past eight weeks.
The innings got off to an excellent start, with Maddie bowling out a batter in the opening over and conceding just two runs through her accurate bowling. Indie, Sadie and Bonita-May continued the impressive momentum, consistently restricting Winterfold’s scoring and limiting them to a low total by the end of the innings. There were also some outstanding moments in the field. Aoife and Indie reacted quickly to travelling balls, preventing valuable runs, while Sadie demonstrated excellent awareness by stumping a batter as they attempted to make their crease.
In the second innings, Miss Lake encouraged the girls to focus on communication and to walk from the crease when batting second, helping them gain ground on the fielders and create more scoring opportunities. Maddie and Bonita-May showcased fantastic communication and teamwork throughout their partnership.
Following some superb bowling from Winterfold, very little separated the two teams. However, Miss Lake’s team managed to secure a narrow victory and remained humble in their success.
Winterfold awarded their Players of the Match to Maddie for her excellent batting and Bonita-May for her outstanding bowling performance.
U10 Tournament at RGS The Grange
King’s Hawford U10 cricket team enjoyed an excellent afternoon of cricket at the RGS The Grange tournament on Wednesday, producing a series of impressive performances to finish second in their group.
The team’s opening match was a challenging encounter against a strong Monmouth side, who were led by a particularly capable opening batsman. Despite facing quality opposition, the Hawford players competed admirably throughout. Valuable runs were scored by William, Edward and Amelie, while Ellie H produced a highlight of the match with an excellent wicket that demonstrated both skill and composure under pressure.
In their second fixture, Hawford delivered a superb all-round performance. The batting display was assured and confident, with the team showing increased skill, power and game awareness. Impressively, they completed their innings without losing a wicket. Amelie was once again in outstanding form, batting beautifully and scoring a number of well-timed runs on the leg side. With the ball, Hawford maintained their momentum as William, Tilly and Ellie H all claimed wickets. Their disciplined bowling and sharp fielding secured an impressive victory, which was made even more satisfying by earning a bonus point for surpassing the 250-run mark.
The final group match saw Hawford continue their excellent form against RGS The Grange’s second team. Once again, the team played superbly and dominated the contest from start to finish. Amelie and William both took important wickets to restrict the opposition, while Cassian produced one of the batting highlights of the afternoon, striking a superb 15 runs that included three consecutive boundaries. Bruce demonstrated excellent consistency throughout the tournament, contributing reliably in every match, while Tom proved to be a safe pair of hands behind the stumps with some assured wicketkeeping.
It was a fantastic afternoon of cricket that showcased the team’s growing confidence, skill and teamwork. The players represented King’s Hawford superbly and can be extremely proud of finishing second in a competitive group.
