Eco Council get straight to work

Our Eco Council have not wasted any time in getting to down to work. Barely a week after being elected, they convened for their first meeting of the academic year. Council members from Reception to Year 6 met on Thursday lunchtime. The meeting started with Mr Stigant explaining the duties of Eco Council to the assembled members. Pupils then discussed the successes of last academic year and looked at videos provided by Eco Schools. This was an excellent introduction for our younger members who might not have been aware of the work conducted by the previous Eco Council.

One of the first orders of business was to elect a chair and secretary for the new Eco Council. Everyone was in agreement that Barnaby B and Holly would act as chair and secretary respectively. At King’s Hawford we are always keen for our older pupils to take on roles of responsibility; it not only benefits them but it also inspires our younger pupils by provided them with role models within the school.

With the chair and secretary roles agreed, the council then decided it would be best to complete an audit around the school site focusing on 10 key areas. These ranged from water use and litter to biodiversity and citizenship.

On Friday we welcomed the Chairman of Wychavon Council, Mr Alex Sinton to King’s Hawford. He spoke to pupils about Wychavon’s Intelligently Green Plan and our pupils shared with him the work they are doing in Eco Council. Mr Sinton then introduced the children to a recycling game called ‘Sort It Out’.

It has been a very action-packed couple of days for our Eco Council but it has been wonderful to see them all engaged and focused on their new roles. We look forward to hearing the results of their audit and their plans for the School’s greener future.
