King’s Hawford Chess Club Shine In Chess Tournament
Children from across Worcestershire came together to compete in the county’s first chess tournament.
The event was organised to encourage young people to play the classic game and test their skills in a friendly competition. Students from different schools took part, with matches open to both beginners and experienced players. The tournament focused on helping children build concentration, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Parents and teachers praised the event, saying it was a great way to support learning and make chess more popular.
Organisers were thrilled with the number of participants and hope to make the tournament a regular event. Children left with certificates, medals, and a sense of pride in their achievements. Many are already excited to take part in future competitions.
This successful first tournament shows that chess is becoming more popular among young people in Worcestershire. Plans are already being made to make next year’s event even bigger and better.
A special mention goes to Simon Barry, our very own chess teacher, who runs chess sessions every Wednesday. His sessions are incredibly popular with students and have helped many develop their love and skill for the game. Simon’s dedication and encouragement have been a key part of preparing students for this exciting tournament.

Autumn Term Chess Report From Mr Berry
The Autumn Term has been another busy and competitive one for King’s Hawford Chess players, with Chess being particularly popular in Year 5.
However, I had an accident in mid-November and broke my ankle, which unfortunately meant that we were unable to complete the Chess tournaments for this term. In Year 6 Lyra was leading the field and in Year 5 Austin and Freddie were battling it out for first place. Frank and Alex were leading the Year 3 competition and Amelie and Isaac were neck and neck in the Year 4 tournament.
Last month 4 of the King’s Hawford Chess players represented Worcestershire in a prestigious inter-county chess tournament in Nottingham. While Worcestershire did not return home with the trophy Alex (Year 3), Amelie and Isaac (Year 4) and Charles (Year 5) all did well against top class opponents, picking up some convincing wins and draws in the process.
In the Spring Term there will be other external competitions which I will pass on details for and it is hoped that King’s Hawford children will continue to take the opportunity to compete against the best primary school chess players in the midlands and beyond.
