Worcestershire Youth Concert Orchestra: Austin’s Review
King’s Hawford bassoonist and current music prefect, Austin R, recently performed at a concert with the renowned Worcestershire Youth Concert Orchestra. Here, Austin writes about his wonderful experience:
Music Centre Bands Spring Concert – by Austin R, Year 6
“I was excited to perform in my second concert as a member of Worcestershire Youth Concert Orchestra (WYCO), which I joined last October. It is one of many music groups offered by Severn Arts where any players from Grade 1 to Grade 8 can enjoy music-making whilst making new friends.
WYCO is made up of Strings, Brass, Wind and Percussion players and we practise every Saturday morning. The teachers are really encouraging and I enjoy when we play all together in front of an audience as it sounds pretty good!
We play varied pieces – some were composed hundreds of years ago and others are movie themes such as from “Wicked” and “APT” by Bruno Mars!
We take it in turns to say few words about each piece in a concert, and I introduced ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’ which was composed by Ennio Morricone in 1986 for a film called The Mission. I enjoyed playing this because of the contrast between the calming oboe solo and the rest of the orchestra’s supporting parts.
Coming up we will play in the Severn Arts Summer Festival at Worcester Guildhall on 27th June. The concert is open to the public and new players (above Grade 3) are very welcome to join the Orchestra!”
