Prep Schools join together for theatre-in-education programme

Pupils in Years Five and Six from across the King’s Worcester Foundation Prep Schools joined together this week to discuss a sensitive education topic before they all combine as one cohort at “Big King’s” in the next couple of years.

As part of the Government’s RSE curriculum, children learn about puberty and growing up. The compulsory health education states that by the end of primary school children should know key facts about puberty and the changing adolescent body, particularly from age 9 through to age 11, including physical and emotional changes as well as menstrual well-being, including the key facts about the menstrual cycle.

To support this, the children engaged with Loudmouth Education and Training in their theatre-in-education programme, My Mate Fancies You. The performance was aimed at helping young people to understand and prepare for the changes ahead.

My Mate Fancies You safely explores the often daunting physical and emotional changes associated with puberty, and prepares pupils for the transition from primary to secondary school. The highly rated programme ensures that young people understand that the physical and emotional changes that happen during puberty are completely natural, and signposts them to key organisations and people for support.

Loudmouth have been working with children on positive relationships since 1994, with the Times Educational Supplement suggesting that Loudmouth “reaches the parts of pubescent experience that most personal and social education doesn’t.”

Children from King’s St Alban’s and King’s Hawford participated fully with both elements of humour and correct terminology. Pupils were delighted to discover that Xander, one of the actors, was in fact an Old Vigornian; a real credit to the performance, Xander impressed with his professionalism when dealing with difficult questions. Pupils asked a plethora of follow-up questions off the back of the performance.
