Sports Report: Week 6

It has been great to see so many of our pupils representing the school in a variety of different sports this week. With netball, hockey, football and swimming competitions taking place it has given lots of children the opportunity to develop their skills.

U8 & U9 Netball v Abberley Hall School

This week the U8 & U9 teams played against Abberley Hall School on the courts at King’s Hawford. The girls were split into four teams and all girls played at least half a match each. Abberley were only able to field two teams so our girls rotated each quarter to give everyone lots of game play.

The games were really even, well matched and everyone tried hard. It was great to see all the girls with a smile on their face and enjoying the game.

Well done to lyra H and Pip K who were voted players of the match for the U8s. Harriette B and Grace D took the honours for the U9s.

U10 Netball v Abberley Hall School

The U10 girls played their first home fixture on Wednesday afternoon – a 7-a-side game against Abberley Hall’s U10 & U11 B Team.  The girls worked well together, sometimes playing in different positions.  The speed of play increased as the quarters went on and there were some brilliant moments from both teams.  Abberley finished the first quarter 4 goals ahead of Hawford, however excellent shooting from Issie F and Erin L brought the score line to 5-6 by the end of the second quarter.  The remainder of the match was a close contest, with both teams scoring 3 goals a piece in the last two quarters. The final score was 8-9 to Abberley.  The girls should be proud of their netball playing.  The player of the match went to Erin L.

U11 Netball v Abberley Hall School

The girls played extremely well against an experienced team. They fought for each ball and passed well around the d creating many shooting opportunities. Our centre passes improved as the match progressed and we battled hard in defence.

Mrs Beech and Ms Layton were impressed with the girls attitude and teamwork and were thrilled to award Lisbeth and Liv match players.

U11 Netball v The Chase

An U11 team made the journey across to Malvern to play a year 7 team at The Chase. Very excited to be playing 7 a-side, the girls warmed up with motivation and focus. Hawford started strong and soon went into the lead with three excellent goals from Georgia. In the second quarter, they found their rhythm and pulled away when Charlotte scored a further four goals. Winning 8-0 at half time, it was an opportunity for Hawford to demonstrate how versatile they are by swapping positions. They continued to work hard and managed to pop a couple more goals in the net curtesy of Amelia. Moving positions again, the whole team played superbly with Anya sealing the win, making the final score 11-2.

A fabulous experience for all in terms of playing a different style of netball and a completely new team.

U11 Football v Abberley Hall School

A group of Under 11 boys made the short journey to Abberley on Wednesday afternoon. Playing two A team fixtures on the same afternoon allowed the boys to experience an A team fixture. The boys rose to the challenge magnificently scoring two super goals and defending with determination and desire.

U11 Football v Winterfold & Blue Coat School

On Wednesday afternoon a group of year 6 boys travelled to Winterfold to play in a triangular football festival with Winterfold and Blue Coat School. The boys were very excited for their first match of the afternoon against Blue Coat as the two teams have shared several close encounters of high quality football in previous years. This match followed a similar theme with the Hawford boys battling hard and playing some nice football in spells. We showed excellent build up play throughout the first half but our final ball let us down at times. It was great to see the boys produce a dominant second half performance in which they were frustrated to be thwarted by a string of excellent saves from the Blue Coat goalkeeper.

In the second match we played against the hosts, Winterfold. The boys really stepped up a level from the previous match and started to put together the work on passing and moving in triangles from Monday’s games lesson. The highlight of the match was a lovely passing move down the left hand side which resulted in a super cross from James and a truly outstanding finish on the volley from a tight angle from Cameron. All of the spectators, coaches and players in attendance were highly impressed by the quality of this goal. It was a great way to round off a lovely afternoon of football. The player of the afternoon was Joe, having produced consistently high levels of commitment and skill in defence.

U10 & U11 Swimming Gala

The U10 and U11 swimmers headed to Abberley Hall School on Thursday afternoon for a swimming gala.  All of the swimmers demonstrated great sportsmanship and support for one another, cheering every competitor in the pool.  The gala started well with Max M and Joe F finishing 1st in their freestyle races.  More victories went to: Michelle Z, Barnaby B, Erin L, Freddie P, Elissa O, Isaac P, Charlotte B and Cameron K.  A photo-finish occurred in the U10 boys backstroke event with Jack M and Hudson M.  In the relay events, Hawford’s A team finished first in all of the medley events, and the boys U10 and girls U11 A teams secured the final few victories of the gala in the freestyle relays.  Hawford’s A team finished in 1st place overall, with Hawford B’s placing 3rd. All swimmers were a credit to the school and should be commended of their attitude and swimming demonstrated.
