Sports Round Up of the Week
U10 v RGS The Grange
Mr Hodgkins’ Team
King’s Hawford’s Year 5 hardball team took to the field against RGS The Grange on Wednesday afternoon, producing a spirited and determined performance.
Hawford fielded first and delivered a superb display of bowling throughout the innings. All the children showed increased accuracy and great intelligence, working together to apply pressure on the opposition.
There were several standout moments with the ball. Joshy struck twice, both wickets coming with the very first delivery of his overs, while Ellie H also claimed two excellent wickets. Will added to the tally with two wickets of his own and a superb catch in the field. Bruce bowled a particularly impressive over, conceding just a single run, and Aurelia and Edward also caused the batters real problems with the consistency and discipline of their bowling.
In reply, the Hawford team found their batting innings challenging, coming up against the pace and quality of three county bowlers in the RGS attack. Despite the difficulty, the team remained positive and showed commendable bravery at the crease, perhaps best illustrated by Edward, whose bat unfortunately fell victim to some powerful bowling and broke! Amelie, Tilly, and Tom all stood firm against the testing deliveries, managing to get bat on ball and contribute some valuable runs.
Overall, it was a performance full of effort, resilience and team spirit from the Hawford side – very well done to them all.
Mrs Beech’s Team
Our U10 team, captained superbly by Ellie M, played a fantastic match with brilliant teamwork and energy from everyone involved.
There was a huge improvement in the bowling throughout the game, with much better accuracy and confidence from all the players. The fielding was also excellent, especially the quick and accurate throws from the fielders back to the bowlers, which really helped keep the pressure on the opposition.
Communication on the crease was outstanding, with players calling clearly and supporting each other brilliantly while running between the wickets.
A special mention goes to Rosie for some excellent batting, showing great determination and timing at the crease. Fearne was outstanding in the field, stopping runs and staying alert throughout the match.
Connie did a fantastic job behind the stumps with confident wicket keeping, while Elizabeth and Sylvie bowled superbly and kept the batters thinking with some excellent deliveries.
There was also great teamwork and encouragement from Fliss, Alanna and Nina, who all worked hard for the team and supported each other from start to finish.
A brilliant performance from the whole squad — well done everyone!
Fielder of the match: Fearne
Batswoman of the match: Rosie
U11 v The Blue Coat School
Mrs Butt’s team
The U11 girls travelled to The Blue Coat School in Birmingham on Wednesday for the first all-girls match of the season.
Captain Zara led the team out and with Blue Coat winning the toss, King’s Hawford were first in to bat.
Several girls took advantage of the shorter boundary with Zara, Indie, Georgia and Robyn all hitting sixes. Charlotte found the boundary with a couple of fours whilst Izzy and Annie took their chances with some quick running to steal singles at every opportunity. The team put down a nice total score of 284.
The girls’ confidence was high going into bowl. Zara and Indie bowled some incredibly accurate overs not giving away a single spare between them. Robyn, Georgia and Izzy all took wickets with their accuracy restricting the Blue Coat runs.
There were some impressive performances in the field with a well worked run out from the combined work of Robyn, Indie and Izzy. Charlotte P stopped a six with a near catch that turned in to a brave block stopping any runs from the opposition. The play of the day came from a tremendous catch in the field from Izzy who showed great reactions and bravery off Georgia’s bowling.
It was a fantastic overall performance from the girls who were congratulated by the opposition coach for their energy in the field and quick running between the wickets. Zara was nominated batter of the match and Annie bowler of the match, both deservedly chosen by the opposition, whilst Mrs Butt was very proud of the overall team performance. Well done girls!
U11 v The Elms
Bowling first, the King’s Hawford attack worked tirelessly to contain a strong Elms batting line‑up on a good batting pitch where the boundaries offered little margin for error. Despite the challenging conditions, the bowlers showed commendable discipline and resilience.
Will G led the way with excellent, tight spells that restricted scoring, while Sam L‑C struck at key moments with some sharp, wicket‑taking deliveries that stemmed the flow of runs during the middle overs and prevented The Elms from fully capitalising.
In reply, the chase began brightly as Charles C and Will G combined hard‑hitting attacking shots with deft deflections to set King’s Hawford off at the required rate. Both batters showed positive intent and ran well between the wickets, keeping the scoreboard moving. As the innings progressed, the rate began to climb, but belief remained.
Having fallen slightly behind, some aggressive and enterprising batting from Sam L‑C and Jasmine O reignited hopes and nearly saw King’s Hawford over the line in an exciting finish.
Well done to the whole team on an outstanding performance.
