Year 1’s week in Pre-Prep

The past couple of weeks have been a little different for Year 1 but their resilience and ability to adapt has impressed all of their teachers. This week the children have continued their learning as a bubble and have taken part in all of their usual activities.

On Monday as part of their science lesson the children headed to the teepee armed with puppets and torches to explore how shadows were formed. They looked at how shadows got bigger and smaller and spoke about why this happens. In the morning they enjoyed their weekly P.E session in the school pool, it is great to see all of the children growing in confidence in these lessons.

This half of term Year 1 have been focusing on geography in topic, in particularly geography of the UK. On Tuesday the children learnt about compass points. The pupils helped direct the ‘Room on the Broom’ witch to collect her lost items and finished with a game of ‘pirates’ on the playground where they had to run to North, East, South and West.

In PSHCE the children were taught some breathing techniques and looked at ways of staying calm and why it was important. The children explored a range of breathing activities such as rainbow breathing, balloon breathing and 5 finger breathing. Year 1 then created their own breathing activities that will help them to stay calm and relaxed.

On Wednesday in their English lesson the children made puppets of the characters in our class story and retold the story. We wrote instructions to make a potion to create a truly magnificent broom. The focus was on verbs, adverbs and adjectives. It was great to see the children getting creative with their descriptions!

On Thursday Year 1 made their own potions by mixing different disgusting ingredients together. Later in Forest School the children had a fire and enjoyed some hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows to make s’mores.

The children ended the week on a high with a visit to the Library Bus where they chose new story books and shared stories. In their games session this week the the children enjoyed playing some rugby and hockey skills game! It is safe to say all of the children enjoyed the rugby rounders game they played with Mrs Marsland!

In addition to all of the above the children have been working extremely hard on their Christmas Play. We are definitely starting to feel festive with all of our elves and reindeer! Year 1 are very excited to share their play with their families in a couple of weeks’ time.

An excellent week Year 1. Well done for being so resilient and adaptable over the past couple of weeks!
