Year 1 Visit Avoncroft Museum to Explore Building Through the Ages

Last week, our Year 1 pupils embarked on an exciting and educational trip to Avoncroft Museum. This visit marked the beginning of our new topic on buildings and construction techniques, and it provided a fantastic hands-on experience that brought our classroom learning to life.

Avoncroft, located in the heart of Worcestershire, is an open-air museum that showcases a fascinating collection of historic buildings, each rescued from demolition and reconstructed on the site. These buildings span a wide range of time periods and construction styles, making it the perfect destination for young learners curious about how people lived and built in the past.

During the day, the children participated in a variety of interactive workshops and activities. One of the highlights was the brick-making session, where the children got their hands dirty mixing clay and pressing it into moulds – just like brickmakers would have done centuries ago. It was a brilliant opportunity for them to understand the time, effort, and skill involved in producing such a fundamental building material.

Another favourite activity was learning the traditional technique of wattle and daub. The pupils had great fun weaving sticks together to create a wattle frame and then applying the daub (a mixture of clay, soil, and straw) to fill in the gaps. This messy but memorable experience gave them a real insight into how walls were constructed before the invention of modern materials like plasterboard and cement.

As they explored the museum, the children also had the chance to visit a range of houses and structures built from different materials, including timber, stone, and brick. Each building told a story about the era it came from and the people who once lived in it. From medieval townhouses to a post-war prefab home, the pupils were fascinated by the contrasts and similarities between old buildings and the homes we live in today.

The trip not only supported our curriculum objectives but also sparked lots of questions and discussions among the children. They returned to school full of enthusiasm and new ideas, ready to dive deeper into our topic of buildings and construction.

A big thank you to the staff at Avoncroft for providing such an enriching experience, and to our parent helpers for making the trip possible. It was an inspiring day that we’re sure the children will remember for a long time to come!
