King's Hawford

20 October

Year 1’s royally good tea party!

Year 1 enjoyed a ‘royally’ good tea party on Wednesday afternoon with a very special guest. The children recently wrote to The ‘King‘ to invite him to their tea party. Each child meticulously wrote an invite during their English lessons; they worked hard to use their best handwriting. It was then with great excitement that the children each received a response from ‘His Majesty‘ confirming his attendance.

On Wednesday, the children came to school wearing their best party clothes. Excitement built throughout the day as the children prepared to welcome their royal visitor. The morning was spent making sandwiches and decorating Gingerbread that had been baked the day before. After lunch, the King’s Hawford red carpet was rolled out, the bunting was hung up and the children busied themselves with some last minute practising how to curtsey or bow .

As The ‘King‘ made his approach to the Teepee, a never-heard-before hush descended on Year 1, leading Miss Lake to comment that she had never known the children to be so quiet! The children quickly gained their composure and extended a big Hawford welcome to their special guest. The ‘King’ took his time to greet each of the children in turn with a firm handshake. With formalities out of the way, the children followed their royal guest into the tepee and took their seats ready for the banquet to begin.

The children set to work devouring their sandwiches whilst the ‘King’ worked his way around the room. The ‘King‘ spent time with each of the tables of children. The children had lots of brilliant questions to ask ‘His Majesty‘ and their knowledge of the Royal Family really impressed their guest. Questions centred around royal pets, members of the Royal Family and modes of transport utilised by the Royal Family.

The ‘King’ was very keen to get to know each of the Year 1 pupils. It was wonderful to see him chatting to each of them in a relaxed setting. Any nerves that the children might have had soon melted away as they chatted happily. It was soon time to say goodbye to their new friend. There was just enough time for a quick group photo before the King left to a rousing rendition of God Save The King!

What a wonderful tea party!
