Year Two’s busy week

Year Two have had a very busy week. In addition to their Multi Sports Morning on Tuesday, they have enjoyed two further visits to central Worcester. On Monday, the children made the short journey to ‘Big King’s’, from where they started their trip with a tour of Worcester Cathedral. Inside the cool Cathedral, they learnt about the exciting local history of the area and were fascinated to learn about Worcester’s historical importance. Stories about Kings and Queens and their links to Worcester captivated them. They also enjoyed exploring the new Undercroft Learning Centre, the former monastic storage rooms which now offer a space for inspiration and discovery.

On leaving the Cathedral, the group convened at the Elgar Tower before embarking on a tour of the city. The walking tour enabled the children to learn even more about the impressive City of Worcester and finished at The Hive Library. Here children were taught how to look for books and how to check books out. After spending time getting acquainted with the library, it was time to head back to school.

On Wednesday the children continued their busy week with a third visit to Worcester City Centre. This time they headed to the river to learn all about the Diglis Fish Pass. This impressive structure is the first fish pass that twaite shad and other fish migrating up from the sea meet on their way upriver. It is the biggest of all the fish passes on Unlocking the Severn, and currently the biggest fish pass of its kind in England and Wales.

The children gained an important understanding of the purpose of the structure and why it is needed. They spent time looking through the unique underwater viewing window that allows staff to monitor the endangered fish migrating upriver to spawn: a face-to-face encounter with wild fish of the Severn swimming by was an exciting opportunity for everyone.

During the visit, pupils heard about the feat of engineering that had produced the fish pass and spent time coming up with their own technical solutions.

It has certainly been a busy week for Year Two, with lots of learning opportunities thrown in!
