Year 4 Explore What Makes Forests Special
Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic day at Wyre Forest on Monday as part of our work towards the Woodland Trust Platinum Award.
Linked to the Wild Trails project, the children explored the woodland environment, observing the animals and plants that make the forest such a special habitat. They gathered ideas and inspiration for creating and mapping their own personal trails, which they will use back in school to help design a class trail to share with the rest of the school community.
Throughout the day, the children completed a series of exciting riddles and challenges to become official “Guardians of Wyre Forest.” They used their senses to investigate the woodland, solving riddles such as “I have no mouth but I whisper, I have no eyes but I see all. What am I?” and “The quieter you are, the more I show. What am I?”
These activities encouraged the children to listen carefully to the sounds of the forest, observe wildlife and appreciate the beauty of the natural world around them. They also became tree detectives, searched for minibeasts and explored how different plants and animals depend on each other to survive.
As well as all the learning opportunities, the trip gave everyone a chance to catch up with friends and share stories from their half-term break. Great fun was had by all as we explored the beautiful woodland trails, covering an impressive 8.2 kilometres during the day. The children showed fantastic resilience, enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the walk.
One of the final challenges asked, “What makes Wyre Forest special?” and the children had plenty of answers, from its ancient trees and wildlife to the peaceful atmosphere and sense of adventure it provided.
It was an excellent start to our final half term of the school year, and we are looking forward to continuing our Wild Trails work back in the classroom.
Many thanks to Mrs Cornish, Mr Stigant, Mrs Elliott and Mrs Knight for accompanying and supporting the children throughout such a successful day.
