Arts Week challenges pupils to think about Our Planet.

Last week was Arts Week here at King’s Hawford. The annual event acts as a celebration of the Creative Arts. During the week pupils from Reception to Year 5 came off timetable to enjoy activities around the topic of: Our Planet.

Pupils enjoyed assemblies on the topic. On Monday Thomas Franks delivered an assembly focused on sustainability and more specifically food waste and sustainability. During the assembly we welcomed Mrs Horrocks’ Sing and Sign group who performed One Earth, One Sky. During Wednesday’s assembly children were delighted to welcome Rev. Rich back to school. Rev Rich gave an interactive assembly Hope linking it back to the topic of Our Planet.
During the week children were challenged to create their own free verse poetry. The poems were then performed in year Group Poetry Slams on Wednesday. Staff were completely blown away by the children’s efforts.
Throughout the week pupils took part in art sessions with Mrs McCullough and Mrs Gregory. During these sessions pupils created small pieces of artwork which eventually contributed to a whole school art installation based on What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.
In form time, year group teachers got creative and delivered inspiring activities based around the Our Planet topic. Year 4 children took part in an excellent debate on the topic of changing lifestyles and the impact on global warming.
Some pupils took part in storytelling activities where they were asked to develop a story around the theme of Our Planet. This resulted in some inspiring short stories which the children excelled at performing in front of their class peers.
Games sessions offered children the opportunity to play games that slightly differ from the norm at Hawford including rounders, Swedish rugby and ultimate frisbee!
Grandparents’ Day was an integral part of the week’s celebrations. You can read all about the day here.

It has been another wonderfully successful arts week and we are already looking forward to Arts Week 2024!
