Chess Club Flourishes over Summer Term
Chess Club has continued to flourish at King’s Hawford over the summer term, with a fantastic 36 children taking part in the lunchtime group. This included a large and enthusiastic group of Year 2 children, many of whom will continue attending next year.
A series of very competitive school tournaments saw Charles H declared the convincing winner in the Year 5 competition. Isaac H was unlucky to lose by a single point to Amelie B in the Year 4 tournament. In Year 3 Alexander S-C and Bella W finished equal first, with Lyra H and Ben B as joint winners in Year 6. Charles N from Year 6 also received a special certificate for “best use of the ladder checkmate”.
It was great to see several children attending the lunchtime chess clubs for the first time and enjoying taking part. While chess is a competitive activity, there was an impressive level of respect for opponents and good sportsmanship demonstrated during the games.
We have been delighted to see many of the King’s Hawford chess players competing in external chess competitions recently. If any parents would like further information on chess opportunities outside school, please contact Mr Berry, our Chess tutor, for more details.
