Year 4 make lifelong memories in Broad Haven
Year 4 have spent the majority of the week enjoying the beautiful unspoilt coastline of Pembrokeshire. Having completed the journey across Wales on Tuesday morning, they spent the afternoon exploring the wide expanses of the beach in Broad Haven with dam building, beach art and beach sports to the fore. We also managed to brave the ocean with some splash time! The evening was spent on a stunning walk along the headland and through the nearby woods before the children watched the sunset from the beach.
After a good night’s sleep in the Youth Hostel, the second day was spent investigating the rock pools and completing surveys. The pupils enjoyed discussing the differences between the habitats found at Hawford and those in the rock pools. We also found time to work on some sand sculptures and to explore Broad Haven’s wildlife area.
The third day was spent at the dramatic Castel Henllys Iron Age fort, where everyone spent the day as Celtic warriors and builders. This reinforced their learning in Humanities, where they have been studying the Stone Age to Iron Age. On arrival back in Broad Haven, there was time for one last play on the beach before returning to the Youth Hostel to pack.
The final day was spent tuning in to Mr Doodes’ assembly on the Coronation before the pupils completed their town study of Broad Haven. This study focussed on travel and tourism and will, alongside the beach fieldwork, form the focus for the their humanities work over the next few weeks.
The Broad Haven trip has been part of the King’s Hawford co-curricular offering for 15 years; it offers the perfect opportunity for our pupils to enhance their learning whilst enjoying the delights of the amazing West Wales coastline. Mrs Redman, Educational Visits Coordinator, believes cross-curricular studies of this type offer our pupils transformative learning opportunities that develop them holistically. They will come home from Broad Haven with lifelong memories of a wonderful week with their friends and a love of the amazing British coastline.
