Eco Committee Puts Sustainability into Practice
Over the past couple of weeks, members of the Eco Committee have enjoyed a packed programme of activities, including gaining expert insight, taking practical action, as well as a special visit to one of the country’s most important natural sites.
The programme began with a visit from Jon Salkeld, who delivered an engaging talk in the Science Lecture Theatre about the challenges of creating a lower-carbon future. Drawing on a career spanning physics, engineering and senior roles at ICI, QinetiQ and BP, Jon explored the science and business behind the global energy transition. He also explained the technological, financial and political factors shaping the journey towards a greener future.
Pupils responded with a wide range of thoughtful questions, prompting a lively discussion. Jon also generously offered advice to those considering careers in the energy sector, giving pupils a balanced and valuable perspective on the opportunities and challenges ahead.
Pupils from Lower Fourth to Upper Remove also visited the National Arboretum at Westonbirt as part of the Thomas Franks Biodiversity Challenge prize-winners’ trip. The day focused on sustainability across Forestry England sites, with pupils learning about human impact, the importance of biodiversity and the careful management needed to keep woodlands healthy and productive. The visit also highlighted a range of potential careers connected with protecting the natural environment.
Closer to home, Eco Club pupils harvested apples from the gardens at No. 12 and transformed them into fresh apple juice. The finished drink was enjoyed by pupils at the start of term and shared with staff during their Monday morning meeting – a rewarding and delicious example of making the most of produce grown on site.
The school has also received its green plaque in recognition of achieving Distinction in the 2025–26 Green Flag Award. Together, these recent activities reflect the enthusiasm of pupils and staff for sustainability and their commitment to making a positive difference, both within the school community and beyond.
