Action

If we want our pupils to have the physical dexterity and stamina to sustain their actions, we must provide them with the instruction and opportunity they need to achieve this.

CCF
CCF

The school organises a contingent of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) of which it is justly proud. The contingent is made up of two sections – an Army section and an RAF section – to provide the framework of a disciplined organisation. Within and through this there may be developed in young people personal qualities of endurance, resourcefulness, self-reliance, leadership and responsibility, and a sense of public service, in the belief that these things are of profound consequence to the stamina and stability of the nation, in civil as well as in Service life.

As well as weekly training, the CCF participates in field exercises and each member of the RAF section goes flying once a year during the school week and gliding on one Sunday each term. Each year the contingent runs two camp activities in the summer holidays (Army and RAF). There are also many opportunities to attend camps and activities run externally, such as a range weekend, mess dinner, adventurous training, national leadership courses, and gliding or flying scholarships.

Sport
Sport

Sport is very popular among both boys and girls and benefits from significant expertise and commitment from our staff as well as some outstanding facilities.

Our rowers have over recent years won many medals in local, regional and national events. Our winter team sports – netball, rugby, hockey, and football – demonstrate an excellence of which we are justly proud, with regular success in local, regional and national competitions and fixtures.

We also enjoy high levels of success in boys and girls cricket, athletics, tennis, basketball, swimming, sailing, kayaking, sub-aqua, cross-country running, climbing, and fencing and we are proud of the breadth of sporting opportunity we offer.

Dance
Dance

Dance provides a liberating opportunity for pupils to experience freedom of movement and expression, and to gain an understanding of cultures from around the world. Dance is an extremely popular co-curricular activity at King’s, with opportunities for boys and girls of all ages to enjoy our purpose-built dance studio — which includes full-length mirrors and a sprung floor — and to perform in the John Moore Theatre and Wightman Studio.

Our dancers can join different dance companies, where they warm up with contemporary dance technique exercises and then work on creating dances for our annual Dance Productions. Our recent productions have focused on storytelling, such as Jungle Fever, Wonderland! and Metamorphoses. These are open to all ages and abilities, with dancers grouped alongside others of similar experience and skill.

Drama
Drama

Drama activities contribute hugely to the life of King’s Worcester. Our accommodation is superb, with a fully equipped theatre seating 300 and a black box studio seating 80.

We stage several large-scale performances throughout the year, which tend to be divided by year group so that all pupils have the opportunity to shine. There are also multiple showcase opportunities across the year. In addition to supporting our performing pupils, we run two flourishing Technical Theatre Clubs.

An important ingredient in the successful co-curricular life of the school is the work of the team of peripatetic Speech and Stagecraft teachers. Currently, over 40 King’s pupils in the Senior School alone commit to regular Speech and Stagecraft tuition outside their academic timetable, continuing a journey that many begin in our Prep Schools. The Speech and Stagecraft team coaches individuals and pairs as they pursue graded qualifications in performance, musical theatre and public speaking from the suite of certificates offered by LAMDA, the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art, and Trinity College London.

Examples of our drama clubs include:

Technical Theatre Club – learn about lighting, sound, costume, set and video projection, as well as key backstage skills.

Arts Award – a fantastic opportunity for pupils interested in the arts to pursue their individual artistic interests and gain a qualification;

Spotlight – an enhanced development programme for our aspirational performers, preparing advanced repertoire for auditions and showcases.

Music

Music co-curricular activities play a vital role in the lives of pupils at King’s Worcester. There are over 300 instrumental lessons taking place each week and many pupils enter music exams each term. With a broad range of ensembles, choirs, orchestras, bands, quartets, and groups, pupils are able to develop high-level skills and experience rich musical styles.

We offer opportunities for pupils to perform regularly, in concerts, both formal and informal, including our very popular Open Mic Nights. We also provide the music for our musical and theatrical productions in the John Moore Theatre. Our pupils’ musical achievements are outstanding and impressive in equal measure.

The Music Department at King’s has long been a centre of excellence and maintains strong links with the music of Worcester Cathedral and the musical life of the town.

Music clubs include: Jazz Band – open to jazz musicians in all year groups; School Choir – a fantastic opportunity for Lower Remove pupils and above.

Whatever your interest, either academic or co-curricular, there will be opportunities to extend your horizons and indulge your interest, whilst making memories that will last a lifetime.

Modern foreign language trips and exchanges are central to our cultural programme, with annual Spanish, French and German exchanges. Sixth Form linguists also spend two to three weeks immersed in a foreign culture as part of their studies.

Classics pupils visit museums and enjoy a biennial trip to Italy, exploring Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia and Rome. Art students benefit from study trips, including a five-day GCSE visit to St Ives and A Level gallery visits across the UK and Europe.

History and Politics offer interactive trips such as Goodrich Castle, First World War battlefields, Paris, and London, including the Houses of Parliament and Churchill War Rooms.

Sport features national and international tours, including cricket in India and Sri Lanka, rugby and hockey in South Africa, rowing camps in Spain, and football tours to Madrid.

Music, Drama and Dance run regular tours and theatre visits, while Physics offers a biennial trip to CERN alongside wider science enrichment opportunities.

The school’s Model United Nations Society is a debating club open to pupils from all year groups. It provides a dynamic and exciting experience through its demand for quick-thinking, sharp understanding and judicious speaking.

Its activities involve pupils engaging in role-play debates as delegates to the United Nations and in simulations of UN committees. We attend two or three conferences each year and enjoy regular success, as our delegates achieve many awards. In our weekly meetings, pupils research the countries they will be representing and the issues they will be discussing, as well as conduct formal debates.
