Action

If we want our pupils to have the physical dexterity and stamina to sustain their actions, we must provide them with the instruction and opportunity they need to achieve this.

CCF
CCF

The school organises a contingent of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) of which it is justly proud. The contingent is made up of two sections – an Army section and an RAF section – to provide the framework of a disciplined organisation. Within and through this there may be developed in young people personal qualities of endurance, resourcefulness, self-reliance, leadership and responsibility, and a sense of public service, in the belief that these things are of profound consequence to the stamina and stability of the nation, in civil as well as in Service life.

As well as weekly training, the CCF participates in field exercises and each member of the RAF section goes flying once a year during the school week and gliding on one Sunday each term. Each year the contingent runs two camp activities in the summer holidays (Army and RAF). There are also many opportunities to attend camps and activities run externally, such as a six-week camp in Canada, adventurous training, national leadership courses, and gliding or flying scholarships.

Sport
Sport

Sport is very popular among both boys and girls and benefits from significant expertise and commitment from our staff as well as some outstanding facilities.

Our rowers have over recent years won many medals in local, regional and national events. Our winter team sports – netball, rugby, hockey, and football – demonstrate an excellence of which we are justly proud, with regular success in local, regional and national competitions and fixtures.

In 2019, our U16 netball team secured a win in the National Schools’ regional competition and went on to be crowned the fourth best team in the country, while our 1st XV rugby players won the NatWest U18 Schools Bowl, to pick just two examples.

We also enjoy high levels of success in cricket, athletics, tennis, basketball, swimming, sailing, kayaking, sub-aqua, judo, cross-country running, climbing, and fencing and we are proud of the breadth of sporting opportunity we offer.

Examples of our sporting clubs and societies include:

Rowing: Make the most of our fantastic indoor and outdoor facilities to perfect your rowing technique. There’s plenty of opportunity to experience rowing on the River Severn. Hockey: Team training sessions for all year groups.

Himalayan Club

The King’s School Himalayan Club was formed in the early 1990s with the first expedition to the Nepal Himalayas taking place in 1993. Since then there have been many expeditions for pupils, visiting diverse locations such as Ladakh, Tibet, Tanzania, Peru, Eastern Turkey and Indonesia. The Himalayan Club has also worked collaboratively with the RNIB for the Share the Vision project, helping visually-impaired students experience the delights and challenges of Morocco, Iceland, and Nepal.

More than five hundred pupils, Old Vigornians, parents and staff have now participated in these exciting and spectacular adventures. In return for the experiences, the club has funded educational and medical projects in all of the countries visited through the Nepal Trust, providing more than £300,000 during its existence.

Drama
Drama

Drama activities contribute hugely to the life of King’s Worcester. Our accommodation is superb, with a fully-equipped theatre seating 300, and a black box studio which seats 80.

We stage several large-scale performances throughout the year and these tend to be divided by year group so that all pupils have the opportunity to shine. There are also multiple showcase opportunities throughout the year. In addition to catering for our performing pupils, we also run two flourishing Technical Theatre Clubs.

An important ingredient in the successful co-curricular life of the school is the work of the team of peripatetic LAMDA teachers. Currently, over 100 King’s pupils commit to regular LAMDA tuition outside their academic timetable. The LAMDA team coaches individuals and pairs as they pursue graded qualifications in performance, musical theatre and public speaking, from the suite of certificates offered by the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art.

Examples of our drama clubs include: Technical Theatre Club – learn about lighting, sound, costume, set and video projection as well as key backstage skills; Bronze Award – a fantastic opportunity for pupils interested in the arts to pursue their particular interest and gain a qualification.

Young Enterprise
Young Enterprise

The Young Enterprise Company Programme offers pupils from the Lower Sixth the opportunity to set up their own companies and, in doing so, they learn from the practical experience gained, and this enables them to develop personal skills as well as business awareness. Companies are encouraged to trade at as many events as possible, and to identify their own selling opportunities.

There is also a competitive element to the programme, which includes writing company reports, exhibiting their products on stands of their own design at trade fairs, and making presentations to wide ranging outside audiences. There are also other prizes which can be won along the way, for such things as innovation, finance, ICT, administration, and being environmentally aware.

This is an exciting, demanding and rewarding programme for all those involved. Apart from the competitive element, the new skills learned and the resulting gains in self-confidence make this a most valuable part of the Lower Sixth year.
