Trips, fieldwork, and expeditions provide such enormous benefits to our pupils, so our co-curricular programme includes a diverse range of trips and expeditions to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to experience memorable educational visits and excursions.
Modern foreign language trips and exchanges are an intrinsic part of the cultural experiences we offer our pupils. Opportunities abound, with annual Spanish, French and German exchanges. Our Sixth Form linguists are also strongly encouraged to immerse themselves in foreign culture and language for two to three weeks as part of their studies.
Sixth Form Classics trips are run to a range of museums and every two years we run a week-long trip to Italy, visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia, and Rome.
The trips organised by the Art Department form an important part of our critical and contextual studies programme. GCSE pupils spend five days in St Ives, Cornwall where they visit the Tate Gallery, smaller galleries, and artists’ studios. A level pupils have the opportunity to visit galleries throughout the UK and in European cities such as Paris, Nice, Barcelona, and Amsterdam, as well as further afield.
The Departments of History and Politics encourage pupils to participate in a wide range of trips that offer them a more interactive experience. We off a Year 7 trip to Goodrich Castle and a Year 9 trip to the First World War battlefields of Belgium and Northern France. In the Sixth Form we extend our offering to include a French Revolution trip to Paris and an overnight stay in London for a History and Politics trip where we visit the Houses of Parliament, the Churchill War Rooms and take a walking tour of our historic capital.
A biennial Music tour, involving the School Choir and Chamber Orchestra, is offered and our Drama Department runs an annual theatre residential trip in London. Theatre trips are organised by our English and Drama Departments, and we run a lively programme of Arts visits in conjunction with Arts Award.
Our Physics Department runs a biennial trip to CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research and, along with our Biology and Chemistry Departments, arranges enrichment and extension trips and visits through the year.
