Pupils Launch Winter Hamper Charity Appeal

Pupils in the Upper Fourth have launched a charity campaign that will look to support young carers in the local area.

The Young Carers Winter Hamper Appeal, run by the charity YSS, will collect items to help create winter hampers for young carers aged 7–18.

Families are being asked to collect donations over the half term break, with items including toiletries and school supplies being especially sought-after. A full list can be found further down on this page.

Upper Fourth tutor, Mr Lummus, spoke to pupil, Brody D, about the campaign.

Mr Lummus: What is meant by a young carer?

Brody: A young carer is a person aged between 6 and 17 who supports a family member at home.

This is usually beyond what is typical for their age.

Mr Lummus: Why do young people become carers?

Brody: Family circumstances differ, but usually family members need to be cared for because they have a disability, physical or mental health difficulties.

Mr Lummus: What does Worcestershire Young Carers do?

Brody: The Worcestershire Young Carers and Young Adult Carers service exists to support young people who have a caring responsibility at home.

Mr Lummus: The Worcestershire Young Carers team offers opportunities for young people to take a break from their care role, meet other young carers and have fun such as going on respite breaks.

Brody: Just think, you could not enjoy all your day-to-day sport or hobbies because you need to be caring for someone else.

Mr Lummus: How can the U4 help this year?

Brody:  This year we are supporting Young Carers’ Winter Hamper Appeal and we are collecting items to help create winter hampers for young carers aged 7–18.

Mr Lummus: As we are enjoying the half term break, we would like you to think about others in our wider community and spend a little time collecting items from the list.

Donations of the following new, unused items would be particularly useful:

• Care bags and toiletries: toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash and age-appropriate skincare products
• Winter essentials: gloves and hats
• Treats: sweets and chocolate – please make sure they have a use by date of 2027
• Activities and gifts: age-appropriate toys and small gifts
• School supplies: notebooks, pens and other stationery

Pupils should hand the items in to their Form tutors by Monday, 9^th November, to allow enough time for YSS to pack the hampers before Christmas.
