Chamber Choir Joins Armonico Consort in Surround-Sound Concert

King’s Worcester’s Chamber Choir joined forces with professional choir, The Armonico Consort, for a concert at Great Malvern Priory before half term, treating the audience to a programme of music for multiple, spatially separated choirs.

The performance renewed a musical partnership following last year’s concert at Worcester Cathedral, when the Chamber Choir performed Karl Jenkins’s The Armed Man alongside The Armonico Consort.

This year’s programme saw the Chamber Choir move around the Priory to sing from different positions, creating a surround-sound effect throughout the concert. Among the works performed was Thomas Tallis’s 40-part motet Spem in Alium, with its many vocal lines bringing the programme’s spatial approach to life.

Alongside this work, the choir performed two new pieces by composer David Buckley: The Lamentations and Maris Stella. The programme brought together music from different eras while giving the singers the opportunity to perform alongside a professional ensemble in the fantastic setting of Great Malvern Priory.
