King’s Celebrates Severn Shield Hat-Trick
King’s Worcester’s 1st XI hockey team is celebrating after winning the annual local hockey derby against RGS Worcester, the Severn Shield, for a third consecutive year.
The fixture, held at King’s Worcester’s all-weather astro pitch, saw outstanding performances from both sides in a hard-fought contest. King’s Worcester took the title following an early goal which saw the score remain at 1-0 until the final whistle.
King’s started the game with intensity, applying pressure to every ball. An early shot was well saved by the RGSW goalkeeper, but King’s maintained momentum and after a slotted pass into the D, Year 11 pupil, Emily, received in space and was able to calmly finish to open the scoring within the first five minutes of the game. The remaining first half was a close affair with no goal scoring opportunities for either team.
The second half saw King’s become more determined in their press, forcing errors and winning possession, but strong play from the RGSW defenders prevented any further chances being taken. King’s won a short corner and a well-executed routine led to some brave defending with the RGSW player clearing off the line. King’s continued to execute their game plan, preventing RGSW from creating any clear-cut chances and nearly adding a second goal in the closing stages of the game.
The evening had started with an exciting match between the 2nd teams, played in fantastic competitive spirit and showing the high level of hockey talent at both schools. Congratulations to RGS for winning this game.
Director of Sport at King’s Worcester, Lora Miller-Symonds, said: “It was a memorable evening and a fantastic example of outstanding school hockey. The quality, intensity and competitive spirit from both teams made it a brilliant occasion, particularly with so many people there supporting. I am incredibly proud of our girls and the way they performed together as a team, showing great determination and composure throughout.”
The King’s hockey programme continues to thrive, with teams from all three Foundation schools enjoying an outstanding start to the season. So far, our teams have shown great quality against strong opposition, with seven teams making excellent progress in national cup competitions.
This latest achievement follows an outstanding year for sport at King’s, which saw the school named as a finalist in the Independent School of the Year Awards in the Sporting Achievement category; the only school in Worcester and the only day school in the UK to receive this accolade.
King’s was also ranked among the top 2% of sporting schools in the country, included among the UK’s top 100 cricketing schools and announced as an official partner of Worcestershire County Cricket Club.
