Many Marvels to be enjoyed in the Land of Fire and Ice
Our Sixth Form Enrichment Tour saw 27 students and four staff venture to the extraordinary landscape of Iceland during the half-term break.
Having flown to Keflavik on the 3rd of November, the group began Day One of the tour with a visit to the Perlan Observation Deck, which gave stunning views across the city of Reykjavik. They then enjoyed a walking tour of the capital, experiencing the vibrancy of Iceland’s most populated city.
An early start on Day Two ensured that the most was made of the “Golden Circle” day, including a visit to Thingvellir National Park, where the divergence of the tectonic plates was clear to see. Next stop was the Strokkur Geyser, along with the breathtaking Gullfoss Waterfall. A visit to the Fridheimar Greenhouse gave insights into the role of geothermal power in horticulture and, after settling into their wonderful accommodation, the group were spoilt with their first sight of the Aurora Borealis.
Day Three was certainly action-packed too, beginning with the Solheimajokull Glacier Hike, followed by a visit to the incredible volcanic coastline at Vik. The final day included an extraordinary educational experience at the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant, enabling everyone to understand the production of energy and Carbfix as a carbon capture solution, before a final stop at “The Bridge between Two Continents”.
The flight home treated everyone to stunning views of the Aurora Borealis once again, and the whole trip was made more special by the infectious enthusiasm and positivity of our students, who will have made memories to last a lifetime.
