The 1st VII opened their account for the 2022 season with a trip across the border into Wales at the end of the half term holiday to compete in the Brecon 7s Tournament.
The squad contained some tired looking faces for the 7.15am Sunday meet, but spirits were lifted by the bright sunshine that greeted them. It was a very young squad, with all but one debuting for the first team. With Millfield amongst the opponents in our group, it could be a tough day.
In their pool the boys faced Bloxham, Christ College Brecon, Millfield and Hereford Cathedral School. The first game against Christ College was tough, with the boys getting off to a slow start. After this, the boys relaxed and put out their best performance to beat Hereford Cathedral School comfortably.
As the tournament progressed, the team played some excellent rugby in patches, managing to make it out of the group and into the plate competition. Tiredness and injuries took their toll, and they were unable to move beyond the quarter final, where they played Cardiff & Vale College, who went on to win the plate. However, it was a really worthwhile experience, with plenty to build on for the coming season.
A special mention goes to the four Fifth Formers who played in their first 1st VII Tournament. This tournament was a great first run out for the boys, and we are hoping for lots of success for the rest of the season.
