King’s Worcester Carol Service 2022

Worcester Cathedral resounded with the delights of much-loved Christmas readings and music last night as the School celebrated the end of term and the approach of the Festive Season with a service of Lessons and Carols for Christmas, led by the School Chaplain, The Rev’d Dr Mark Dorsett.

The congregation of pupils, parents, staff and OVs left the inspiring surroundings of the Cathedral truly uplifted after the return of this annual service in its customary form. The run up to Christmas really has begun for our Foundation community.

Familiar readings from Senior Pupils, including Monitors, the Heads of School and Scholars, and members of staff, including the Chaplain and the Headmaster, were interspersed by myriad musical items, performed faultlessly by the Lower Years Choir, School Choir, Chamber Choir and Senior School Choristers.

The entire congregation joined in with favourite carols including Once in royal David’s city, O little town of Bethlehem and Hark, the herald-angels sing, before concluding the service with a rousing rendition of O come, all ye faithful. The retiring collection was for Crisis at Christmas, the Maggs Day Centre and St Paul’s Hostel for the Homeless, helping to support members of the wider community at what can be a particularly difficult time of year.

Alongside Director of Music, Simon Taranczuk, Christopher Allsop, the Assistant Director of Music, played the organ and directed the Chamber Choir and the Lower Year’s Choir at this, his last Service at King’s before he leaves to take up a new post at Eton College. We take this opportunity to recognise Mr Allsop’s considerable contribution to the King’s School and Worcester Cathedral, wishing him and his family the very best of luck in his new role.
