Pupils Enjoy Immersive Spanish Exchange

Pupils from King’s enjoyed a memorable cultural experience over Easter as they took part in the school’s annual Spanish exchange with IES Isla Verde in Algeciras, southern Spain.

The exchange saw 15 pupils and two members of staff travel to Spain for a week‑long homestay designed to develop language skills and deepen cultural understanding. Each King’s pupil was paired with a Spanish student of a similar age and stayed with their host family, providing an authentic insight into daily life.

On arrival, the group received a warm welcome at IES Isla Verde, where pupils and their families were greeted by the Headmaster and treated to a celebratory buffet. The following day included a formal reception in the Assembly Hall, complete with performances of the national anthems by the school orchestra, before King’s pupils were presented with IES Isla Verde T‑shirts. A shared ‘second breakfast’ of chocolate and churros set the tone for an enjoyable introduction to school life in Spain.

During the week, pupils explored the historic town of Algeciras, including a visit to the Town Hall – the site of the historic Algeciras Conference of 1906 – as well as the ancient Moorish city walls and main square. Educational day trips took the group to Cadiz, travelling via Puerto de Santa María, and to the impressive Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, followed by a visit to the fortified coastal town of Tarifa, where pupils stood at the southernmost point of mainland Europe.

Over the weekend, pupils spent time with their host families, with many enjoying trips to iconic Spanish cities such as Seville and Ronda, as well as an afternoon of beach games at Rinconcillos in Algeciras. The exchange ended with a final day trip to Gibraltar, where pupils enjoyed a guided tour of Europa Point, St Michael’s Cave and the Rock’s famous resident apes before returning to the UK.

The visit to Spain followed the recent stay of 15 Isla Verde pupils at King’s before Easter, where Spanish students enjoyed excursions to Stratford‑upon‑Avon and Oxford, tours of the Morgan Motor Company and Worcester, and a full immersion day in school, including a cathedral singing practice, lessons and bilingual activities.

The Spanish exchange continues to be a valuable and rewarding experience for pupils at King’s, strengthening cultural understanding and bringing language learning vividly to life.
