George is Our New Head Chorister
Congratulations to Upper Fourth (Y8) pupil, George H, who has been appointed Head Chorister (Cantoris) in the Cathedral Choir. In this, he follows on from Jack T, who had his Valediction as Head Chorister shortly before the half-term break.
George has been an excellent vocal leader recently, regularly singing solos, and this appointment is a very proud moment for him and his family, as well as for the School. He has been one of the leaders of Decani over the past year and moves to lead Cantoris as Head Chorister. Cathedral Choirs are split into two sides; those who sit on the side of the Dean (Decani) and those who sit on the side of the Cantor or Precentor (Cantoris), and it’s somewhat unusual to move from one side to the other. There can be some fierce, although always friendly competition between them, particularly in their annual cricket match!
George was the recipient of the Old Choristers Medallion, and this has now been awarded to Lower Remove (Y9) Chorister, James P in recognition of his service to the Cathedral Choir. Our warmest congratulations go to James as well.
The boys, girls and lower voices of the Cathedral Choir have a busy schedule of services over the Easter period, including the annual Royal Maundy Service on Thursday 28 March, when Her Majesty The Queen will be distributing the Royal Maundy gifts on behalf of His Majesty The King at Worcester Cathedral. For this service, our Cathedral will become a “Chapel Royal”, with the Chapel Royal Choir singing alongside our Cathedral Choir.
Before that very special event, they will perform Bach’s St John Passion in the Cathedral on Friday 22nd March. Tickets for this concert can be booked here.
