Chicago Highly Acclaimed in National School Theatre Review

December’s spectacular production of ‘Chicago’ has been described as “far more than a typical school production” in a glowing National School Theatre Awards review.

The independent reviewer, who attended Chicago in the lead up to Christmas, praised each member of the cast and crew, commenting that “every element worked cohesively to create a dazzling theatrical experience.”

There was high praise for the talented leads, who delivered jaw-dropping performances throughout.

The review congratulated Bella for her mesmerising portrayal of Velma Kelly, describing it as a “major highlight of the production,” with her stage presence labelled “outstanding”. Flo, who took the role of Roxie Hart, was commended for her extremely compelling performance, with the striking chemistry between her and Bella delivering some of the most memorable performances of the evening.

Henry’s entertaining performance as Billy Flynn was another notable highlight, while Sam’s portrayal of Amos Hart was described as “deeply poignant”.

In the supporting roles, Amelia’s performance of Matron “Mama” Morton was powerful and engaging, Tigo, as Fred Casely, had “real impact”, and Sophie as Mary Sunshine delivered a “convincing performance”.

Elsewhere, the ensemble was praised for delivering “consistently strong performances”, with pupils showcasing “impressive synchronicity.”

The exceptional musical direction, polished choreography, clever set design, atmospheric lighting and stylish costume design were all commended for creating the electric atmosphere and perfectly capturing the drama and spectacle of the jazz age.

The reviewer, clearly staggered by the exceptionally high standard of Chicago, concluded the review by saying:

“Chicago was far more than a typical school production. It was a polished, energetic, and highly engaging performance that demonstrated exceptional talent, creativity, and teamwork. It was clear that this stunning production left a lasting and memorable impression on both cast and audience alike.”
