Engaging in Global Issues at Cheadle Hulme Model United Nations Conference

On Saturday 5th October, 11 students ranging in age from Upper Remove to Upper Sixth travelled with Mrs Shearburn and Mr Ball to Cheadle Hulme School near Stockport in Cheshire to participate in a Model United Nations conference together with around 25 other schools.

We had been assigned the countries of Lebanon and Argentina and our delegations attended debates in their committees on a range of topics including the issue of responsibility for immigrants travelling across the English Channel; forced displacement of people due to conflict; lethal weapons that contravene international agreements; illiteracy in LEDCs; child labour in global supply chains; protection of coastal settlements from rising sea levels; and assisted dying.

The debate spanned the entire Saturday, culminating in the introduction of a crisis scenario that evening. This new development became the focus of discussion during Sunday morning’s session.

We fielded very strong delegates, many of whom had never been to a conference before, and it was really pleasing that many of our students were recognised in their Committees for their performances.  James C(U6) was Highly Commended in the Justice Committee; Tobias A (L6) got a Special Mention in the Political Committee; Anne G won a Highly Commended and Pranav M won Best Young Delegate in the Disarmament and Security Committee; Sophie R (L6) won Highly Commended in the Special Committee on Slavery and Trafficking and finally, Samantha C received a Special Mention for her performance in the SOCHUM (Social, Cultural and Humanitarian) Committee.
