Form Song Competition Showcases Young Musical Talent

The Form Song and Solo Competitions brought an extraordinary variety of musical performances this term, with pupils from the Lower Fourth and Upper Fourth year groups taking part.

The competition, adjudicated by Mr. Christopher Allsop, former Assistant Director of Music and current College Organist at Eton College, saw pupils excel across a wide range of musical styles.

L4F took the prize for Lower Fourth Song with their lively performance of Riptide by Vance Joy, while U4C were crowned winners of the Upper Fourth Song category with their rendition of Carly Rae Jepson’s Call Me Maybe. Other standout performances included U4E’s Freed from Desire and L4E’s energetic version of Don’t Look Back in Anger, both of which were runners-up in their respective categories.

The Solo Competition saw an impressive range of instrumental and vocal performances. In the Lower Fourth Vocal Class, G. Loughton took first place with her performance of My Grand Plan by Rokicki, while S. Vickram, performing Touch the Sky, and D. Bramble, with I Dreamed a Dream, earned runner-up positions.

For instrumental soloists, G. Bryer captured the audience’s attention with Heller’s Prelude in C# minor, winning the Lower Fourth Instrumental Class. Meanwhile, B. Lee’s emotional rendition of Over the Rainbow earned him a runner-up spot. In the Upper Fourth, R. Woodward’s stunning organ performance of Messiaen’s Joie et Clarte des Corps Glorieux took the top prize in the Instrumental Class, while H. Kehoe’s flute performance of He’s a Pirate came in as runner-up.

The vocal talent of the Upper Fourth was equally impressive, with G. Norris taking the top spot in the Vocal Class for her engaging performance of Whatever Happened to My Part? by Du Prez and Idle. E. Hind’s powerful interpretation of Skyfall earned her the runner-up position.

This is the second large-scale music competition of the half-term, and every pupil in the school has been involved in preparing a song for performance. With such a wide range of musical genres on display and enthusiastic audience support throughout, the event truly highlighted the vibrant musical community among the pupils. The winners and runners-up will perform again in a special concert, promising another memorable showcase of young talent.
