King’s Geographers Carry Out Fieldwork in Somerset
Last week geographers from the Lower Sixth spent three days in Somerset carrying out practical fieldwork. Students surveyed beach and sediment shapes, analysed sea defences and investigated how physical processes influence the coastline. A range of techniques was also used to explore the characteristics of Minehead and Watchet. The group interviewed the local police and were treated to a talk about how local people are improving their community through ambitious regeneration projects. New statistical techniques were learnt to help analyse the data and spatial patterns were identified using geographical information systems. The students approached all the tasks with energy, often late into the evening, and were excellent company throughout.
