King’s Rowers Achieve Great Success in Indoor Championships
On Sunday 14th January, we hosted the King’s Indoor Rowing Championships. The event attracted entrants from schools and club across the region: King Edward School Stratford, RGS Worcester, and Cheltenham College, alongside Hereford, Worcester, Stratford upon Avon and Evesham Rowing Clubs. Over 200 athletes competed over the five hours of racing in individual and relay races and these provided plenty of excitement and fierce racing in front of enthusiastic spectators, who were well catered for with hot drinks and magnificent cakes provided by parents of the senior rowers. Thank you to all the rowers, staff, and volunteers for making it a terrific event.
It was great to see our new rowers from the Lower Remove (Year 9) racing so well in their first major event. Henrietta V had a terrific fight in her 4-minute race, coming second by just two metres; Sophie E was chasing close behind and took the Bronze Medal. In the boys’ 4-minute race, Sazan M also took the Silver Medal, whilst the Year Nine sprints over 500 metres saw Florence V take Gold and Perry A take Silver in the girls’ and boys’ events respectively.
The Year Ten events saw Anna C win Silver and Lucas C claim Bronze in their 5-minute races, while Freddie G and Merri L were champions in the sprints, with Lauren H just behind Merri in Silver place. Other individual results are listed below.
The relays brought their usual frenetic display of lightning-quick changes, the occasional mishap and explosive sprints. King’s faired very well across all the junior and senior events, with some extremely quick times set over the 2000-metres races. Wins were recorded by our girls and boys in the Year Nine and Year Ten events, with a clean sweep of all the medals in the Year Nine Mixed Relay. This outstanding performance was repeated with wins by both our Year Nine boys and girls in their relays and the Sixth Form boys, whose scintillating time of 5 minutes, 50 seconds saw them take the Bronze Medal. The boys and girls combined to win Gold and Silver in the Mixed Relay, as did the Fifth Formers (Year 11), and our Senior Girls came second in their event.
