First Model United Nations Conference of the Year
On 1st October, 11 students from the Upper Remove to the Upper Sixth had a very eventful weekend at the 2022 Model United Nations conference, which is hosted by Cheadle Hulme School.
This annual conference gives the pupils the chance to hone their debating skills and discuss highly meaningful issues and topics that are prevalent in today’s world; it also allows them to network with like-minded peers. Furthermore, it encourages the pupils to understand the country that they are representing and defend their country’s point of view; this may be challenging at first, but allows them to gain a world view and see the multiple facets of certain issues. All in all, it always proves to be an enriching and fun-filled experience. There was a diverse range of pupils taking part from 25 schools, including one from Germany! KSW represented two delegations:
Saudi Arabia – Riya M (Ambassador, L6), Izzy P(FF), Josh F(U6), Anna P(FF), Oliver Rearden (UR)
USA – George C (Ambassador, U6), Salvador K(U6), Liam R(U6), Samantha C(UR), Rowan C(UR), James C(FF)
The assembly of all participating schools convened in the morning, before separating into 10 committees, which discussed a variety of global agendas such as the death penalty, period poverty, population control, gender and racial representation in police forces, political misinformation and the failure of democratic institutions in the Middle East. This year there was also an addition of forums, which allowed committees discussing issues of a similar nature to come together and debate on resolutions and amendments passed in committees. At the end of the two days, the forums discussed an interesting crisis, which required countries to solve issues caused by all land masses joining together and creating a new Pangea – this allowed for very creative resolutions and amendments to be passed.
