North of England Sevens for the 1st VII

The 1st VII Rugby Team travelled to Liverpool for the annual North of England 7s tournament, which is one of the biggest on the schoolboy circuit, with teams coming from far and wide to compete.

Foundation Director of Sport, Mr Mason said,

“The team was placed in a tricky group, requiring them to play a lot of good rugby and to focus in order to progress through to the knockout stages. QEGS Wakefield were the first team King’s faced in the tournament and the squad started the day well, with a determined performance to give us the victory.

“Two more wins came against Pocklington and Loretto, which set them up for a big game against Llandovery College to finish the group stage. Despite an excellent first half that saw the team take a 17-0 lead, they lacked a little control in the second half and lost narrowly, placing them second overall within the group.

“This meant the team were entered into the Plate competition. The first game was against Lancaster GS, where the team put in a controlled performance which saw them progress into the semi-finals. Unfortunately, despite having a couple of good chances to take the win at the back end of the semi-final game, the team were not able to convert these into points and therefore lost a very closely contested match. The 1st VII squad was excellent throughout the tournament and they now look forward to the Nationals next week.”

Congratulations to the boys on their sterling efforts; we wish them luck for the remainder of the Sevens season.
