Outstanding Performances in County Cross Country Championships

King’s took a team of 20 talented athletes to compete in the County Cross Country Championships held at Bromsgrove School. Each athlete earned their place at this event by qualifying through the Worcester City District Championships before Christmas.

The Bromsgrove cross course provided a challenging and varied test of endurance, attracting some of the best runners from across the county.

The day began with the Junior Girls’ race, which featured a tough and highly competitive field. Despite the challenging conditions, all the girls did themselves proud, demonstrating grit and determination throughout the race. A special mention goes to Katie C (U4), who led the King’s team with an impressive performance as the first athlete home for the school.

Next came the Junior Boys’ race, which started at a blistering pace. However, the King’s athletes displayed excellent race tactics, running sensibly and steadily working their way through the field. A standout performance came from Freddie P (U4), who finished in an outstanding 6th place overall. This result is especially impressive as Freddie is eligible to compete in the same age category next season, promising even more success in the future. His finish is expected to secure him a place in the National Finals, set to take place in West Sussex in March.

The Inter-Girls followed, racing in a highly competitive field of talented cross country runners. All three King’s athletes should be immensely proud of their efforts, as they finished within the top 20 – a remarkable achievement given the calibre of the competition. A special mention goes to Lucy T (FF), who delivered an exceptional performance to finish within the top 10.

The Inter-Boys’ race saw the performance of the day from a King’s perspective. James C (UR), who had set himself the goal of a top five finish, exceeded all expectations by claiming the silver medal. He ran a brilliantly tactical race, gradually working his way through the field and finishing with incredible strength and determination. This outstanding result has guaranteed James a well-deserved place in the National Finals, again very impressive as he was competing in the year 10 and year 11 category.

Finally, the Senior Boys tackled the challenging 6km course, which tested both stamina and mental toughness. All three athletes should be immensely proud of their performances on this demanding terrain. Ben G (L6) engaged in a thrilling cat-and-mouse battle with a Bromsgrove athlete, ultimately being narrowly edged out in the final stages to finish 9th overall. Aled L (L6) also showed tremendous tenacity, ending his race with an impressive sprint finish, fighting for every place and demonstrating the determination and team spirit of the King’s squad.

Lora Miller-Symonds, Director of Sport, expressed her pride in every athlete, “It was great to take such a large team to the event, showing the strength of our athletes across the ages. There were so many strong performances, and we look forward to seeing how many of our athletes earn a place in the Hereford and Worcestershire team to compete in the National Finals.”
